I am just wondering how to collect it.

The Maria Theresa Thaler (MTT) isn't well known. I often describe it as one of the worlds most known-of, unknown coins. Unfortunately Many English language articles on the coin are very misleading at best and at worst are down right wrong. Even in German many references refer to the coin in generalities. How to collect it? I have spent over 10 years collecting the coin I collect originals ( 1741 -1780 inclusive) Early re-strikes 1781 - 1820, and modern Re-strikes circa 1816- current date. ( for definitions see Numismatics International Vol 50 nos 5/6 May/June 2015 pages 70 - 78: I was the author) Note: The over lap in date range between early and modern is not a mistake.

The best easily available reference is on line but be very cautious with some of the mint and date attributions( my research has shown them to be wrong)
http://www.theresia.name/en/

That web site is based on the separate but related works work of Dr Leypold and Dr Hafner. Yes proofs have probably been produced for at least 50 years. Answering your question is difficult it really depends on how much hunting you want to do, the type of collector you are and your budget. MTT's range in value from Silver value through to around US$30,000. However it is possibly to obtain major rarities for less than US$3000.00

I like big silver coins and have Peace dollar set, Walking Liberty Set and thinking about these M. Theresa and Morgan dollars.

If your an American collector, as much as I hate to say it, then the Morgan dollar would be much easier for you to collect. The coin is well known there are heaps of references and nearly every dealer has an example. That said the MTT is more mysterious, it is possible to make new discoveries and as stated earlier you can with hunting obtain coins that are phenomenally rare for affordable prices.

Is the M. Theresa a silver dollar?

"Dollar" is the modern English version of "Thaler" Thaler is a nickname for the 1500's coin Joachimthaler Guildengroschen even German speakers had problems with it and gave the coin a number of nicknames including ; Joachimer, Schlickiener ( The coin was first produced by the Schlick family) and thaler. Thaler was the name that ended up being used in English Thaler means "from the valley.

I paid $20 for the coin from a very reputable shop in Largo, Florida.

Probably a very good deal the coin contains just over .75 oz of Fine silver

Thanks for the reply. I was impressed with the M. Theresa because of its beauty and size. That is one big silver coin. I did not directly compare it to a Morgan or a Peace dollar. "Coins" had a good article about the "Big Seven" Silver coins. I have three of the big seven in complete sets but not in mint condition by far. I would like to know more about the M. Theresa and I appreciate the references.

Thought I'd share and get austrokiwi and everyones opinion. I pocked it up at a pawn shop for $10 a year ago. Don't collect them but could pass up the price so why not. I think, if I remember correctly and attributed it correctly, that I classified it as one of the more common variety restrikes? but it's in great shape and I liked the holder.

Thanks for your thoughts guys & great read on this thread! I may just have to start picking them up what I run across them

A very modern MTT restrike type. Most likely to be a 60s specimen. I would say it is H60 or H61a.

As Henry says its a modern re strike. The edge would be a confirmation of the date...a blurred edge would place the coin post 1960. That packaging has always intrigued me. I believe it dates to the late 1960s and 1970s.

Note Hafner 60 and 61 are more akin to type designations that a variety identification

That looks just like the coin I paid $20 for including the dark toning around the edge of the coin if I am seeing it right. You got a great deal for ten bucks. I saw some other very large silver coins today, but all more expensive than the M. Theresa. I understand you can get the coin in Unc. for small premium over silver price if you get the modern restrikes. Cascade seems to have gotten his coin at a major discount. Where do you live and where is that pawn shop, heh, heh. I got me three Unc. Morgans today and it cost a lot more than the thaler. Those big silver coins really attract me. I can afford them, and they are still a precious metal. If I bought a gold coin that large I would have to take out a mortgage. I never thought about collecting foreign coins but those big silver ones may change my mind. I am collecting Liberty Standing quarters and I am just stumped with the scarcity of good ones, so I am sliding over to Morgans for a while.

OK, I am going to try this. I am brand new to this forum but not to MTT. I have seen reference to austrokiwi's paper on 20th Century MTT and wondered where I could get a copy of that. Trying to build that necessary reference library. Also later I will be referencing a couple of unusual MTT fakes for comment. Look forward to the comments!

pm me your email address

Also look at my articles in the numismatist:

December 2014
January 2016

and for a prequel to the MTT the July 2017 edition... article titled "Bubble and bust, 5 sols in the 17th Century)

There is also an article that offers definitions of "original", "early re-strike" and "modern Re-strike" in the NI bulletin ( NUmismatics International) Volume 50 nos. 5/6 May/JUne 2015

Unfortunately, as a new member to the forum, it will not allow me to use the email feature. It thinks I want to spam. Austrokiwi, can you send me the email to which I can then respond? Many thanks!

Just tried to PM you but seems the default setting of you blocks me messaging you. I am not sure if that is also related to you being new

Greetings! For those searching for the 2003-04 error where Clementia is upside down in relation to Justitia, note that the coin can sometimes be found in the older, vertical, folder issued by the Austrian Mint. See image following. However, not all coins in the folder are the error coins.

There appear to be so many varieties of the Theresia Talers and many different opinions. I have been collecting MTTs dated between 1741 and 1779, but apart from Davenports inclusion in the European Talers publication, there isn't a lot more detailed literature available.
I am waiting with eagerness for austrokiwi to write a book on this coin, his expertise is enviable. Like MTT I am unable to contact him directly to find out about the progress of the book and to reserve a first edition :)

Does anyone know if the long awaited book on Maria Theresia Talers by @austrokiwi is available for purchase yet, and if so any ideas where. Thank you
