good advice John1. If nothing else, there is a TON of shield pennies at very high grade in bankrolls. I find there to be no reason to get mint sets. I can't picture modern cents to ever be worth much, since there are billions minted each year. (last few years exception, perhaps)

Is it just me or are these the laziest looking design? It reminds me of a contest to design the reverse on a Lincoln Penny and the winner was a third grader from Lake Wobegon.

What I'm trying to say is these are ugly (in my opinion).

I hate the LMC reverse... The Shield cent is a great improvement! I love the LWC!

What the States needs to do is have a Lincoln obverse for the dollar coin, put a classical style Liberty on the $5 coin and make the former Eisenhower dollar the $10 coin!

I had to look up "Lake Wobegon"...I thought that you were referring to "Camp Wannaweep".

Garrison Keillor is very entertaining when he's not preaching politics. His 'The News From Lake Wobegon' was always good for a laugh too.

My favorite was the LWC. When viewed with a 10 power loupe it looks like a nice table medal.

Actually I was really thinking about a circulated set just for the reasons stated - obtaining at face. The only real objection I keep coming up with would be the lack of the SF mintmark. That alone would keep the set from ever becoming a complete set.

The cost of a mint set is a real drawback.

After looking at all the real circulated Memorial and Wheat pennies, I just really gave a thought to starting off with a high grade circulated set and it would be cheap also.

I've been pulling rolls of circulated annual coins as I get them. Been putting together the various quality circulated coins I come across into annual rolls (D and P) for quite awhile now and have never really looked at them as a collection of value (just as an odddity. One roll of each annual mintmark is sufficient for me. The only exception that I have allowed is the 2009 coins. Those are of low volume and possibly will be of some value for either of the grandkids.

I'm doing an album. I have LWC & LMC with proofs in one album and LMC, shield, satin mint sets, error & varieties in another.

I have been setting aside a few lightly circulated coins in bu condition for each year. Today I got a nicely browned shield penny in my change. I set it aside to save it as most of these post '83 pennies do not wear well and this penny was very pretty!

I've been setting aside the new rolls of pennies when I used to ask for them from the bank to mine them for copper. Since then I quit going to the bank for pennies as I've had better luck going to the grocery store. Their pennies seem to have much more pre-'82 copper and even LWC's.

Lake Woebegone indeed, don't forget the old song from the '60's (Hello Mudda, Hello Faddah, here I am in (whatever the name of the camp is)).

I've been collecting good guality penny stock for some time (maybe two or three rolls). Where I live I'm always short on Denver material so the quality of those coins is usually lesser than Philadelphia (older vs. newer even for the same year).

Try to find MS 66`s or above, seal them in flips, and certify them after a few years.

Allan Sherman ... "here I am in Camp Granada".

Interesting to see the comments on the reverse designs of the Lincoln cents; the only thing I think we can agree on is that the mint can't seem to please everyone. High fives to Windchild, though, for some excellent design ideas. I, too, feel that the shield reverse on the cent is very eye-pleasing; I never felt that the LMC design was as balanced as either the wheat design was or the shield design is. In fact, I'd rate the shield design as one of the best to come from the mint in recent years. *uses shield to protect self from outraged collectors*

The Wheat cents was around when I was young, then the Lincoln cents made their debut. Then they stuck around for so long that they were basically a backdrop that weren't thought about. They were just accepted as the way things were after all they had a run of 60 years. If the shields last that long how would we feel about them in 2060. Even today's young kids will be old collectors and the rest of the old guard will not be around to say how things were when we were kids.
