@bobby1313---Right now, 2013 ASE prices are: APMEX----1-19=$34.49; 20-99=$33.99; 100-499=$33.49; 500-999=$32.99; and >1000=$32.69. APMEX(2012)onEbay=$35.52. Goldmart(any #)=$32.60.In view of prices like this (and especially in consideration of energetic defenses of APMEX's "quantity discount prices" I've seen in previous CCF posts), I'm honestly not sure what to think--- beyond that thought about APMEX prices being a bit lower than a lot of the "winning" (LOVE that term!) prices I've seen on ebay auctions. I do have to admit, though, that shipping charges of $5 for the 1st coin and 25 cents for each addt'l coin are a pleasant change from APMEX's ordinarily homicidal shipping charge schedule (still nasty, but at least a step in the right direction)... I know a certain number of good deals slide through ebay, but it looks like there's also plenty of room for APMEX level prices, too...

APMEX sells boring easy to find bullion, where as individual sellers seek out rare long out of stock items often and ship WAY faster and have a stronger FEEDBACK reputation. Better communication.... I suggest to all to buy from the small business owners on ebay and all around you verses the big corp money hungry figure heads worried about only getting fatter.... Now as Bobby pointed out that does not mean they are short on business as MANY new buyers always coming into the game who are WAY more apprehensive about buying, via worried about fakes, worried about buying dead end high premium silver which may turn out to be a fad from lack of knowledge and being new to the game, etc. So they choose the "safe buy route" and know they are getting decent price and REAL silver from a place like APMEX.... I honestly see decent deals on certain items they sell, but never pull the trigger mainly due to their slow processing due to bulk orders I hear from stories here and many negs and neutrals are just too big a red flag. I know I am protected but time is money and red tape tie ups slow me down.... I move fast and slow shipping simply cost me time and money. Many times I have an item in my house for ONLY 24 hours before it sells and moves on....

Quote: I hate to say this, and I hope ima DEAD WRONG... but I think this marks a top of some sort in PMs..... You are not dead wrong. In fact, you are 100% correct. We have indeed reached a top. We have reached a top many times before and will reach much higher tops in the future. Silver has traded between $27 and $35 for 15 straight months. No big breakout and no big collapse. APMEX needed to expand their horizon to grow market share.

Guys, thanks for the feed back everyone's comments are interesting. I'll find that news piece later and share with you, but when I read it, I got the impression that ebay wanted to capture more sales by having APMEX as their primary dealer to so speak. Now, I said "a top of some sort" and I think, really I do, that its a short term top that matches well with the price action of silver as of late, I believe one of you mentioned about its price action in the past year or so.... and I think that's one thing I been watching, that we really aren't going anywhere for now with silver, just a whole lot of churning, which I think again, is a good thing considering where we have come from.. and the same with gold.

The more people buying the better. I don't see what's wrong.

This doesn't signal anything except the fact that APMEX is looking for more business and profits. With the financial turmoil in the world right now, PM's are far from their top.

Soooo... after about a week here with this topic I started, I do feel rather strongly that APMEX being featured on ebay is a short term top in the PMs. I am basing this partly on the fact that PMs and their price action is outright ugly and showing the way down,, exactly what happens to the general public- they leave other areas of savings and investment and go in large crowds where everyone else is and its clear in Ebays comments regarding inking the deal with APMEX they wanted to capture more sales of PMS, JUST as they are starting to fall down. So we have this perfect storm for much lower prices and I do think we'll see them. Not to mention the fact that I was looking at other discussion threads on various coin forums and a constant common talking point I have seen for the past few months and its been building has been "man I bought silver at X and now its much lower". The good news is, if you have cash, you can take advantage of these lower prices to add to your collections or investment holdings. Just remember to nibble, don't go all in even after a big drop because these sort of things tend to reel you in and then you find out it went even lower from where you bought. ... as I always say, what is cheap becomes cheaper. BTW- in no way should this comment be viewed as negative about metals NOR is it to be taken as saying prices are going to drop like a rock, the market decides all those things. Yes, prices always fluctuate, they do for everything, However, many times trends come into place and run their course, and time will tell if we are now looking towards a period of downtrends in the prices of PMs. What I am saying is to be cautious, stay your course and enjoy the bargains! :D

I think a bigger indicator of a top is an increase in the number of small time "dealers" selling PM's on ebay. I don't know how to track that but when everybody thinks there is easy money to be made selling on ebay, look out below.

Yea that could be it too. However, from this article on ebay hooking up with APMEX, and ima try and find the link to the article so all can read, the gist and take away was ebay wanted to capture even more sales from the public that has been buying coins and bullion in a big way. Generally when the public crowds into something, it spells doom, big time. And I do feel strongly that Joe Public is leaving the stock market, I see it everyday, and going to other places, thinking its a safe haven and good return.... and as things go, the stock market will run higher, leaving behind the general public :/

Marketing metals to the general public has been going on for years. Expanding the base of metals holders simply takes physical precious metals off the market and lifts the price for all of us who already hold precious metals. The question is if the general public understands that holding physical precious metals is best thought of as taking out an insurance policy against economic collapse rather than an investment with a dependable return.

Not sure why anyone would buy from APMEX at those prices, when I can walk into my LCS today and pay $34.06 for an Eagle or Maple Leaf with no tax or shipping. This is at the weekend spot of $30.06. Problem with APMEX or anyone on ebay with fixed prices they have to up the price to compensate for spot fluctuations during the listing period. A LCS is adjusting their prices thruout the day.

HaroldS I agree and always try to buy from LCS. Where I live they charge almost 6% tax (even on cash purchases). There are times APMEX is lower when you account for tax. If you buy large amounts you can do ok. Just a day or so ago they had 2006 MS69 graded SAE's for $6.99 over spot. For someone that collects slabbed SAE's that price is pretty good. ebay to me is way over priced on almost everything. One correction about APMEX and fixed prices. The prices there change along with spot and are not fixed. If you go to their website you will notice the pricing changes with each refresh. You don't lock in a price until you head to checkout.

well...
once the public finds out PM prices are going down, they will dump, and en masse, and prices will tumble hard. typical crowded/bubble action.
So, to me, more of the general public crowding into PM spells disaster just as the housing crisis. Now ima not saying the implosion will be just as same, but I say, prepare for some low prices that makes prices drop hard.
I look forward to such a hard drop, let everything reset and get the weak hands out that got late into PMs.

I like to buy from my LCS as much as possible, but I just bought 20 ASE's from an on line house for $33.68 ea, which includes insurance and shipping.
