Shouldn't we retire the use of the British monarchy on Canadian coins now ? We are after all, nearly 150 years independent and it isn't only the British that we have history with as a country.......time for us to put someething else, something/someone Canadian on our coins, even if it is only the prime minister.

I think we would have to go back a lot years to find a prime minister worthy of being immortalized on our coinage.

We are in the Commonwealth, so the queen has to be on our currency, unfortunately. I would completely support Canadian prime ministers being featured, or a fictional design, like the Peace and Morgan dollars of the US. Sadly, I doubt it will ever happen.

Once you get Prime Ministers or Presidents on coins, you never get them off.

I agree with dartviking, we should replace queen on coins with Canadian figures (i.e. prime ministers, aboriginal leaders, etc) that are more relevant to modern Canadians.

Well, from the ages of around to 20-35 you look sort of the same - your face doesn't change that much. But getting into your 50s and 60s you see the change more pronounced. I prefer the effigy design of the 1990s to the early 2000s - it looked the most elegant to me.
Although, I agree with dartviking's comment about there being more to Canada than just its British counterparts. We often ignore the Vikings, the French, and to a greater degree, First Nations.

Aren't Canadian figures already on bank notes? I prefer the Monarchs on the coins personally.

1) A viking coin would be a great idea! I don't mean on the reverse, I mean on the obverse. 2) I like the "big crown" of the 90's effigy myself, though the young bust will always by my favorite. Busts 1 and 3 are my favorite, I don't care for 2 and 4.

I know the image of Elizabeth II has changed a few times, but was wondering if any of the other monarchs had different images? (or any other changes such as George VI having mention of India removed in 1948)

My favourite was the 1953-1964 portrait.

George V had the Godless coins of 1911. They omitted Dei Gratia from the obverse. Apparently, it upset a lot of people and was put back on all Canadian coinage, either as DEI GRATIA or shortend to D:G: edited: got my facts wrong.

Anjohl, or anyone else for that matter, why does the monarch has to be on coins? She is not on all notes.
