Good point ghostrider! I'm currently going through the collection now and creating excel spreadsheets with all the coins. Trying to get an estimate on the value of the collection. Then I will have a tough decision to make.

If you inherited the collection you will want to set up the cost basis at the time you received it from the estate. That value is what you base any gains off of. Chances are it has gone up little in the time you have owned it (unless you received it years ago).

I had always been a collector, but my collection efforts were nearly completely dormant until my mother gave me my grandfather's collection a couple of years ago.

I've been very active ever since.

Wow, that's quite the list of Morgan's! Ya, that's fine, you don't need to take pics, I was more curious about which dates/mint marks. Again wow!
If you don't mind me asking where did you find your average selling prices? They seem very low to me.. People have a hard time finding scrap common date Morgan's for under $27-30... Honestly we'd need pics but if those are halfway decent in condition I'd say that the common ones would fetch $35-$40 (again depending on condition)... But seriously, even if there in horrid condition you should be able to get a few dollars over melt, personally I wouldn't dream of selling a single one that you listed for under $27-$30 in scrap condition... And again depending on condition more...
If you get some extra time and can post pics we can help with grade and value.. But I understand that's alot with the amount you have..
You should check out PCGS's photograde online to get an idea of grade, and then numismedia.com for an idea on values (they tend to be a little high.. But very close..) or check completed ebay listings to see what they've been selling for.

You know, it seems like you have a decent chunk of repeats is that collection. I would see where the overlap is and if you are going to sell, maybe just start with the doubles Sell of the ones that are more beat up, keep the nice ones. Of course, you will want to research varieties. Some variations may have been discovered in recent years.

Also, a tip on pics. I find putting up pictures to be quite a chore. Videos can be much easier. Depending on the camera, maybe not the same quality as a photo, but it would be a rough estimate on grade to help the fact that you have a large quantity to go though. You could also fit the entire inventory into the video and people can point out highlights.

mah5259,
IF time is not an issue, take it slowly and listen to the members. If they confuse you, SAY SO! We are a vocal bunch!
Is there any other heir? If not, you are free to take it as slowly as you wish.
If so, that changes things.
Lastly, remember that there is a difference between a collection and an accumulation.
Coins tossed is a cigar box are an accumulation, whereas coins in an album are a collection. Organization is the big difference.

That 1937-D three-legged nickle? Nice! The hoof is a key to it being genuine and the hoof is clear as crystal!
A keeper in memory of your grandfather. My opinion.

All of the modern proof and mint sets?
Not so much.

As a favor to me, what year was your grandfather born? This provides me with a clue as to what he might have gathered.
(What some people consider an "old" coin, I consider contemporary! I spent them!)

Lastly, WE CARE!

Concrete advice:

Separate the proof/mint sets into two groups:
1964 and before. [Coins are in cellophane - plain manila envelopes]
1965 and after. [Packaging grows bulkier over the years]
If there is a 1970 in there, STOP! Post a picture.

Just a beginning. Anyone agree with me? Let's give mah5259 some concrete direction!

IMO, to divide previous and post 1964 is a logical starting point.

UPDATE:

I've been going through the coins and logging as much information I can regarding the coin and condition.

I came across this piece of paper in the collection which I believe lists some of the error coins in the collection?

I don't understand the significance of the 1987 P and D Half Dollars.

I don't believe the halves were circulated that year.

mah5259 - that is quite the collection of coins. Is the error list just a list of error coins, or is it a list of coins in the collection as well? Honestly, you should have the coins appraised by someone who kno .s and you trust, because it appears your grandfather had quite a penchant for collecting them.

The 1987-P and 1987-D Half Dollars were only available in the annual mint sets.

You might even see if there is someone from this forum near you. I once bumped into a fellow metal detectorist and found out we were on the same forum! This forum is much larger and there is bound to be someone experienced that can spend a saturday helping you get organized, if you think it would help.
