Yeah that looks like two nickels were stuck together not with extra metal but with verdigris...

Ick...

$2 says it comes off in acetone.

jmkendall...Am I correct in saying ( as per my picture) , that the oddity is below the actual face of the coin itself...?
Then it looks like some one may have used another part coin and a hammer, or vise and the partial coin used will not interfere with the rim of the original coin...?

Wert, great picture but no, the feature is above the obverse. The larger light rust colored area is above the obverse and Monticello is below that feature, but may be impressed into the obverse as well.

Kinda looks like that liquid steel stuff that comes in a tube. Might have used that and pressed 2 together.

lets remember that this coin was taken out of circulation after...at most 11 months, and in 1969. I'm not sure the liquid steel stuff was around then. Though the thought had crossed my mind.

The dark gunk is on the surface of the nickel and impression is in the gunk, it is not into the surface of the host coin.

It is old glue or another similar substance with a mirror image impression from another nickel.

My brother and I bought some around 1972 when we sprung a leak in a gas tank while deer hunting. Our bubble gum just wouldn't plug it up.
It was that exact same color.

Yup, it's been around for a while now.
Either that or an epoxy. Try lifting it off.
Get brave and fire up that torch.

Thanks Guys, I had no idea that stuff has been around that long. All I remember from 1969 was watching the Lunar landing....and the guy hanging by his helmet and the steel beam!
