You can get a decent denarius or antoninianus for under $30. Siliquae will set you back a little if you are of a lower budget.

Ben that was a nice Postumus that went pretty cheap. On this side of the pond it would have sold for more. Some of the cheaper silvered coins are the antonininus of Gordian III. I see nice ones on ebay all the time and they go for little money.

For that kind of price you could get it in 32mm bronze VF+ if you have patience ! Antonio sells very nice coins and I have bought more than a few bronzes from him. He usually gets top prices but I have on occasion gotten some of my 5% wins from his auctions. I bought a VF AELIVS CAESAR Sestertius for $80 not too many years ago. A 'dealer' offered me $150 in trade for it ! I declined the kind offer.

I had no idea they came in bronze! I would like that but the silver comes much better preserved and shinier - for a purchase like this id go for silver (a really nice bronze wouldnt be out of place but it could only ever be a filler until such a time as I could get it in silver).
And double darn it - A SECVLARES with a dear sold for only £25! I need to keep my eye out better.

Don't mistake 'shinier' for better preserved. All that glitters is not gold.

When I was Ben's age (17) the BBC series of I Claudius was running on PBS. I became so fascinated by the story of the Julio - Claudians that I redirected my attentions to trying to collect that period. Not an easy task back then as local dealers had nothing to offer. I satisfied my inclinations by buying and reading used paperback copies of Tacitus and Suetonius. One of these historians (I think it was Suetonius but it was 37 years ago !) mentioned how he had visited someone named Rufus Furius (there after referred to simply as Furius). This was before 'Life of Brian' but I think you get the idea. Fast forward to 2006 and I needed to come up with an ebay ID. I pondered it for awhile and slipped back through the years. Remembering a name which I found so comical at the time I flipped it for additional effect (sounds like a textbook term for a rabid dog) and here I am. BTW ..... you may call me FVRIVS COGITO ERGO SPUD ! I think ...... therefore I yam Yeah ..... I have been swimming in this 'commode' called Worcester for 54 years ...... always said I would leave ..... before its too late !

FR, I like the way you came about your user name. BTW, up to about 2 years ago I lived in Yarmouthport on the Cape. Moved to southern Washington state to get away from the New England winters.
