NathanASE, no worries. I respect your opinion but disagree with it. The reason why I don't believe it is considered stealing is because the charity only wants the coins as there profit for the charity, to them it doesn't matter which year the coin is it just matters that the denomination of that coin either stays the same or goes up. It would be considered stealing if I was just walking away with them but am not. How I know they didn't put it in on purpose is because the coins I find seem a lot like the ones we find when roll hunting which brings me to say that there are old coins in circulation and sometimes they end up in a fountain. If somebody put the gold $5 coin into a fountain it wouldn't really matter because its gold, then the charity just needs to notice that its worth more than $5 and there good to go.. no water damage. but if I saw any silver coin or any copper coin in a fountain and it was worth hundreds perhaps thousands of dollars I would take it out in a heart beat then I'mstanding there with a really really valuable coin and I have no idea if it was put in the fountain as an athousand dollar donation or a donation of its face value 10 or 25 cents. I would like to say that me walking away with that coin is what they get for putting it in a fountain I mean a coin worth athousand dollars of numismatic value does NOT belong in a fountain, I am not taking it because I'ma thief I'mjust taking it because I'man avid coin collector who likes to save coins. So most likely that athousand dollard dime or quarter would be put in a normal coin roll and took in to the bank and lost forever, they would see only the size of it and say okay this is a quarter it belongs in the quarter roll and That.... That is why you are a way more smarter of a person to take a coin like that in to the charity and give it to them in person and Tell them about how its worth more than its face value. Would you be okay if I took an 1804 dollar and made a wish on it and then tossed it in an incinerator, its like that with fountains in Canada because of the alloy recovery program. when I look into a fountain and see pennies and pure nickel nickels in it those coins arnt ever going to be seen again and I'mokay with that as long as there not old or valuable. I just wish that someone other than my friends or family could understand why it is harmless.

Just from experience of visiting our local children's hospital, where they have a fountain...my 4 old looks forward to making a wish and throwing a few coins in. I do a lot of CRH so that I get plenty of coins "saved" from circulation. It is easier than trying to even see dates, let alone digging coins out of fountain. Also, I am teaching my child about giving to charity. The money goes towards cost of living for parents of sick children, so they can stay close to their child during times of their child's illness. Every penny counts, as well as prayers. This topic has made me realize how important this donation is and will probably be throwing more in than ever. Thank you !

Quote: What if, as mentioned earlier I wanted to donate a $5 gold piece and tossed it in....? Please tell me you would never do anything so careless. You can never assume they will know what they have beyond face value! Quote: That is why you are a way more smarter of a person to take a coin like that in to the charity and give it to them in person and Tell them about how its worth more than its face value. While this is better, it is just you being lazy. Let me be clear... If you want to donate the actual value of a coin to a charity, then sell the coin and give them the actual value in cash money. Charities have enough to do, having them sell your coin is one more thing they should not have to do.

This has to be one of the top five strangest threads on CCF in a long, long time.

You should see some of the ones we have had to remove.

Normic, Normic, Normic, have some dignity and stick to roll searching buddy. From the look of the finds you posted there isn't any difference and you can do it at home, nice and dry. There has to be some limits.

I don't know if its the area I live in but roll hunting just cant be done around here anymore, not only that but where else can I look through pennies in a country like Canada?. Canadian fountains have pennies in them and I like looking through them in the fountains making sure none of them that are old or valuable end up going to a place where I cant get them from, the bank. Same with all other denominations.

I have designed a few fountains professionaly. I've looked at the coins while inspecting how they are operating but never saw much to take, haha. I would have no problems taking one out if I could discretely reach it from the edge and then replacing it for the same denomination. Most charities just dump the change in counters at a bank and would just get face no matter what.

That's the issue haha only look at the coins from the surface while sitting at the edge. If you see something you must have discretely place your hand in and grab it.
Dredging the bottom of the fountain for coins makes you look like a homeless person. If I saw someone with multiple coins on the fountain edge I would be taken back too. So I would search with your eyes only and try not to cause a scene haha

Why can't you roll search? Seriously, dredging public fountains is sad. I agree with Bertensgrad, it makes you look homeless. The embarrassment I'd feel if people saw me digging around in a fountain wouldn't be worth a wheatie every now and again but I guess people measure dignity differently. Coin rebel........heheheh
