I really don't see a problem. It's really simple if you think about it. At the place where there are such fountains, look around at how people that work there are dressed. If you can find someone that is dressed like a worker there, go to a place that sells similar clothing. Buy what looks like a Uniform. Go back with nets and buckets an d wear that Uniform and clean out the fountain right there during the busiest time. If a security person approaches, don't panic, just ask him to hold something of yours while you WORK.

I guess the question is who owns the coins and are you really stealing if you are replacing them? The issue might be kids seeing you do this and think you are taking them and then they do just that, citing you as as means for permission to do so. I don't think we really have coins in fountains here, not in my immediate area. We have some in fishponds but they would be difficult to get to

That wouldn't really work because they come at night time to do it and I don't even know where the control room is to turn everything off. magpie, that thing with the kids, that's actually happen a lot. Kids come up to me and there like "no its ok he's doing it" and they start taking them out and then I need to tell them what I'm really doing so they don't get in real trouble. The other day a lady asked me if I needed money while I was doing it and I explained it to her and she gave me some coins anyway.

Today I found these in the fountain I usually check 1947 D Nickel 1974 1 pence coin An unidentified Asian coin and a 1968 Canada nickel which I just took for the pure nickel in it. Both nickels I found were replaced with newer ones from the 2000`s. This time the security guy walked right passed me as I was doing it so everything's cool.

just wrong... Completely unethical and desperate. Again... That often goes to a charity... Or to maintain the building/grounds. What if, as mentioned earlier I wanted to donate a $5 gold piece and tossed it in....? Your going to replace my hundreds of dollars worth of donation with $5 face value? Wrong! Plain and simple. They are donations... If you want to go through them go to the business owner etc and ASK.... Otherwise it's OFF LIMITS. You wouldn't go through a Salvation Army bucket... Or St Judes container inside a Walmart... Same thing only they're trusting that people won't do what you do ... But apparently they need to put grates over the coin pool too as people aren't trustworthy.. Regardless of wether you believe it or not, some person or CHILD, made a wish (or often a prayer) on THEIR COIN.... So to replace that with one of your own is just horrible... Again, regardless of wether you believe it or not. The person who put the coin in DID believe it. That's just horrible. Not to mention they are PRIVATE PROPERTY.... Without direct permission it is stealing, no "grey area"!! STEALING. Even if you replace them, you are taking something that IS NOT YOURS! Stealing! And again, how do you know someone didn't put a valuable coin in on purpose? I'm sorry if that sounds rude, but that's just disgustingly wrong, despicable behavior... Replacing them or not, and deserves a trip for a couple teeth to the stomach.... or jail.... I'm sure the inmates will learn quick that if they toss a couple coins on the shower floor your fair game....

NathanASE, no worries. I respect your opinion but disagree with it. The reason why I don't believe it is considered stealing is because the charity only wants the coins as there profit for the charity, to them it doesn't matter which year the coin is it just matters that the denomination of that coin either stays the same or goes up. It would be considered stealing if I was just walking away with them but am not. How I know they didn't put it in on purpose is because the coins I find seem a lot like the ones we find when roll hunting which brings me to say that there are old coins in circulation and sometimes they end up in a fountain. If somebody put the gold $5 coin into a fountain it wouldn't really matter because its gold, then the charity just needs to notice that its worth more than $5 and there good to go.. no water damage. but if I saw any silver coin or any copper coin in a fountain and it was worth hundreds perhaps thousands of dollars I would take it out in a heart beat then I'mstanding there with a really really valuable coin and I have no idea if it was put in the fountain as an athousand dollar donation or a donation of its face value 10 or 25 cents. I would like to say that me walking away with that coin is what they get for putting it in a fountain I mean a coin worth athousand dollars of numismatic value does NOT belong in a fountain, I am not taking it because I'ma thief I'mjust taking it because I'man avid coin collector who likes to save coins. So most likely that athousand dollard dime or quarter would be put in a normal coin roll and took in to the bank and lost forever, they would see only the size of it and say okay this is a quarter it belongs in the quarter roll and That.... That is why you are a way more smarter of a person to take a coin like that in to the charity and give it to them in person and Tell them about how its worth more than its face value. Would you be okay if I took an 1804 dollar and made a wish on it and then tossed it in an incinerator, its like that with fountains in Canada because of the alloy recovery program. when I look into a fountain and see pennies and pure nickel nickels in it those coins arnt ever going to be seen again and I'mokay with that as long as there not old or valuable. I just wish that someone other than my friends or family could understand why it is harmless.

Just from experience of visiting our local children's hospital, where they have a fountain...my 4 old looks forward to making a wish and throwing a few coins in. I do a lot of CRH so that I get plenty of coins "saved" from circulation. It is easier than trying to even see dates, let alone digging coins out of fountain. Also, I am teaching my child about giving to charity. The money goes towards cost of living for parents of sick children, so they can stay close to their child during times of their child's illness. Every penny counts, as well as prayers. This topic has made me realize how important this donation is and will probably be throwing more in than ever. Thank you !

Quote: What if, as mentioned earlier I wanted to donate a $5 gold piece and tossed it in....? Please tell me you would never do anything so careless. You can never assume they will know what they have beyond face value! Quote: That is why you are a way more smarter of a person to take a coin like that in to the charity and give it to them in person and Tell them about how its worth more than its face value. While this is better, it is just you being lazy. Let me be clear... If you want to donate the actual value of a coin to a charity, then sell the coin and give them the actual value in cash money. Charities have enough to do, having them sell your coin is one more thing they should not have to do.
