Hello everyone, I would like to know your thoughts about...

Taking coins out of fountains and looking through them for older ones perhaps worth something, then putting an other coin back in to the fountain of the same denomination as the one you took out.

And of course putting all the other ones back.

I hope you all understand that.

I`v done this before and get a lot of hassle from security. is it good,is it bad, just what ever you think would be best.

Best time to do it is around 3:00 A.M. when security is fast asleep on their Lazy Boyz. Wear dark, non reflective clothing that is water proof/resistant and NEVER tell anyone what you're up to!
Then sneak into the water fountain using a pen light with a red bulb that doesn't illuminate to bright at night.
Grab the least shiniest coins quickly, they are generally the oldest, however, always keep one eye out for security. They lurk around every corner ya know.
When you grab a few KEY dates or silver coins, make a discreet dash for Home with your newly recovered stash hidden away in your pouch!
This is the technique I've been using for years.....................I've finally come outta da closet and I'm proud of it!

There are some downsides to this technique, but there are some risks to being a conservator.

Personally I wouldn't do it... It seems like going over the top to get a coin or two to me.. But to each his own. I don't know.. Lol, it just seems like too much/too far to go for me...

I could see grabbing a silver quarter or something else that caught my eye, and replacing it if it was in sight right at the edge of the fountain.. But from your question I just picture someone wading around in a fountain with there pants hiked up collecting all the coins to go through which I would say is definitely wrong.... Definitely bad karma IMHO, like I said, I could see checking one that caught your eye... But doing rounds to all he fountains within an hour to "swim" and collect change just sounds wrong.

And usually those fountains are private property and the coins are collected periodically and the proceeds go towards taking care of the grounds, charities or whatever... So while it wouldn't be horribly wrong in your eyes if your replacing them, they technically belong to whomever's fountain it is and they might not get it nor believe you about replacing them all... They'd probably think you were stealing them and I could see them unhappy about that. Why don't you find out who own's the fountain and try to get the job collecting the change?

So aside from checking one or two along the edge or from asking permission to gather and go through it all I'd say its definitely wrong but again, that's just me...

Lol, I have a technique for this, I take 5 or 6 dollars in zincolns over to the fountain and dump a handful wherever I see a good coin nearby, and then casualy grab it. I suppose other people think I accidentally dropped that coin in. Lol I'm so weird

I think you're far better off making some kind of arrangement with whichever charity or organization it is that usually receives and counts the coins from that fountain. They may already have someone checking the coins for them and maybe that person is even paying for the privilege, in which case anyone going "fountain-diving" is in effect stealing, even if the found coins are replaced one-for-one.

I don't go all the way in but I do reach in as much as possible and gather up a good portion of the fountains coins then take hand fulls of them out and look through them on the side of the fountain. Than if there`s nothing there I put them all back. I only sometimes look in past the water and usually do just as well. Thanks everyone

No offense but this seems like odd behavior. I agree with Sap set up a deal with the owner of the fountain otherwise leagal expenses could potentially dwarf the value in any find you may make.

I should clarify, I donate far more money than I take from the fountain, and I certainly don't go out of my way to get the coins.

I have a plan:
Mask, snorkel & fins.
And a camo wetsuit, so no one notices.

I'm not sure if this is a joke, but I'm laughing just picturing somebody doing that and getting caught. That may be the strangest conversation with the security guard that I can imagine. I really want to see that conversation though.

It`s not a joke. And yes the conversations with them are very entertaining, sometimes they don't even believe me and just say to leave.

I bet!

I gotta ask it then, what are your best finds from these fountains? (haha I feel strange just asking that question).

I do it mostly in America because that's the only place my family goes shopping that actually has a fountain. its at an outlet mall too.

1cent 1910,1914,1919,1920,1932,1935,1936,1937 and probably all the rest of the wheat years including a 1955S
5cent 1939,1942,1948,1952,1958 but probably more that i`v forgotten about
10cent 1964 Canadian. No silver American. dimes yet
25cent just those 1776-1976 comm ones

Lots of Canadian ones too like the 1938 nickel I got a while ago.
