Many years ago, I was at the Trevi Fountain of the Three Coins in The Fountain fame. Embarrassingly, I didn't have any coins in my pocket to throw in. So I just wrote out an I.O.U. on a scrap of paper, and chucked THAT in!

Its not any weirder than wanting to look through Salvation Army kettles. Or searching tip jars or those "Take a penny, leave a penny" cups

except wanting to and doing it are totally different things.

I really don't see a problem here, but after reading most of the posts before mine, all I can say is, "You all sound like my wife!" Now just stop and let me and Normic67 enjoy our time here without the constant sounds of negativity ringing in our ear holes.

Once, I was searching through some coins when this guy had the audacity to slam the cash register drawer on my hand. The nerve of some people.

I know what you mean. Our 8 year old son gave me the oddest look when he found me going through the coins other members of our family put in his little charity money/savings box he brought home from school. Oh well, he's young - he'll learn.

I do not think I would attempt this but each to their own. I would feel odd. I feel odd enough when I check coinstars for rejected coins. I cant imagine how weird this would make me feel.

IMHO, this activity =/= dumpster diving or coinstar checking. When the Complete Breakdown of Modern Civilization arrives, THEN it will be acceptable to scrounge coins from fountains. Meanwhile, have you tried roll searching? It's waaay less labor intensive, does not attract hostile attention, and you don't need to get your shoes wet.

I'm totally with Sap and his thoughts. But...have you ever considered going through the cups of 'blind' (India's a good place) beggars? They could hardly complain as long as you replace a (say) a cent, dime etc. with same!

A friend of Normic67, old and desperately ill, summons to his bedside his three closest advisors: his doctor, his priest, and Normic67.
"I know," he says, "they say 'you can't take it with you.' But who knows? Suppose they're mistaken. I'd like to have something with me, just in case. So I am giving each of you part of my valuable coin collection and I would be grateful if at my funeral you would put it in my coffin, so that if it turns out that it's useful, I'll have something."
They each agree to carry out his wish.
Sure enough, after just a few weeks, the old man passes away. At his funeral, each of the three advisors is seen slipping something into the coffin.
After the burial, as the three are walking away together, the doctor turns to the other two and says, "Friends, I have a confession to make. As you know, at the hospital we are desperate because of the cutbacks in funding. Our CAT SCAN machine broke down and we haven't be able to get a new one. So, I took $20,000 worth of coins from friend's collection for a new CAT SCAN and put the rest in the coffin as he asked."
At this the priest says, "I, too have a confession to make. As you know, our church is simply overwhelmed by the problem of the homeless. The needs keep increasing and we have nowhere to turn. So I took $50,000 worth of coins from our friend's collection for our homeless fund and put the rest in the coffin as out friend requested."
Fixing the other two in his gaze, Normic67 says "I am astonished and deeply disappointed that you would treat so casually our solemn undertaking to our friend. I want you to know that I placed in his coffin coins with the same face value as every coin in his collection!"

Yes I have done roll hunting before, and a lot of it. Thai-Vic, that is a good idea but not only am I pretty far from India , I also have no idea what there coins are like. The best i`v don with roll hunting is a 1939 Mercury dime and the rest is all pennies and nickels.
