It looks like lead solder on the obverse.

It was mounted in something, I have a walking half that looks very similar on the reverse side, the cause? It was mounted in my great grandfather's money clip before the clip snapped and he removed it.

Wow that makes a lot of sense being that only one side has this black substance. Thanks for posting.

If its globs of glue, acetone will make quick work of it.

No the acetone will NOT harm your coin at all.
But be sure you use pure acetone from the hardware store and NOT nail polish remover even if it says it pure acetone. It has other nasty stuff in it that WILL harm the coin.

Awesome I actually think I have some pure acetone laying around so I think I will give that a try. If that doesn't take it off I think the next best explanation was it was in a fire. Ill post some pictures after I try the acetone.

You might have to change out the acetone if it gets nasty in a couple hours. Just give it a good soak. Dont rinse it off after the acetone will evaporate and you wont be left with water spots on it. Good Luck!

I think I did like 15 minutes. Nobody on ebay would bid on it so I got for for a buck or two.
