I like the idea of an open design competition, it could result in some outstanding, fresh ideas! It's too bad, however, that all three coins will feature the same designs (except for the denomination). While I'm definitely disappointed in the fact that common obverse and reverse designs will be used, it's not the first time it has happened in the modern US commemorative series (at least for one side of the coin!) - the 1983/84 LA Olympics silver dollars and the 1995/96 Atlanta Olympics silver dollars are two examples that come immediately to mind. The reverse of the 2003 First Flight Centennial coins were very close in design as well. Here's a link to a previous discussion of these new baseball coins; it includes a few images I posted of a US Mint medal issued back in 1972 to honor Roberto Clemente - its surfaces are convex. https://goccf.com/t/124045Quote: There have been four baseball-themed coins already, I believe this would be the "set of four": 1. 1992 XXV Olympiad Silver Dollar 2. 1995 Atlanta Olympics Half-Dollar 3. 1997 Jackie Robinson Silver Dollar 4. 1997 Jackie Robinson Gold Half-Eagle Regarding the set put out by Canada for the World Baseball Classic, my belief is that it was too ambitious of a program for an event that is still trying to find its way. If I recall correctly, it included four silver coins and three gold coins - and would cost almost $4,000 to purchase the entire set. The price tag has kept many folks away from the set. I'm a life-long baseball fan. If they had released one silver coin and one gold coin, I probably would have purchased a set but seven coins and $4k was enough to keep my credit card in my wallet.

The 3 gold coins certainly does make getting them all very cost prohibitive, I have considered the one with the diamond on it as my first gold coin and am hoping to find that later one cheaper, fingers crossed. The WBC is a great idea imo especially with the Olympics getting rid of baseball, I do agree though its still trying to find its way. 7 coins was probably a bit ambitious, though I would say 4 silver and 3 gold coins is ambitious for pretty much any event unless they were doing them by country where youd presumably only get your favorite. The interesting aspect of the WBC is that in the US its not a huge deal as you could see from how half our players treated it like spring training, cough Adam Jones cough. Yet you see other parts of the world like the Dominician team and everyone is playing every pitch like its game 7 of the World Series. I like to believe at some point the US will get tired of being embarrassed in it and show up to play for real or find guys that want to, but so far we havent done so. For those that are interested the link below does carry the coins slightly cheaper than the Canadian mint sells them for along with many other world coins for cheaper than list price from their respective mints. I assume they get a bulk discount from the mints. http://www.talismancoins.com/servlet/StoreFront

I think this is a big development. All the US coins prior to this have a picture of something or someone. But now they are going to make a coin that mimics an object (a baseball complete with stitching and it's curved). I thought they should have done this with the Girl Scout coin (a coin that looks like a cookie). I don't like baseball much, but I really like the concept here and the fact that the Mint is taking a big step.

basebal - I am a baseball fan as well! Well they call what my Twinkies play the last couple of years baseball I guess. As for the canadian set - I just thought $460 plus the inflated shipping the RCM charges was not going to sell a lot of those coins - so the 7,000 mintage limit might help - but I have plenty of other coins to purchase for that kind of money. I also like the WBC and did catch a few of the games - including watching Dedundo dominate the final. Nothing like an out of control fastballer to keep the feet moving in the batters box!

Doug the Twinkies had a good run time to come back down to earth lol, definitely a very different look for them now though. If you live there hows the stadium, looks really nice but I must say I didnt understand putting an open air stadium in that part of the country. The coins were pricey I got all four silver ones for 420, not cheap but a lot better than what the RCM was selling them for. I dont mind paying a little extra for them since baseball ones from an actual mint are few and far between and I wasnt sure if theyre going to do them for all the WBCs or that was just a one off thing. The WBC was great this year lots of surprise teams like Italy, could have done without the Dominicans going undefeated though. They did have a great roster though. Dedundo really was the prototypical dominican pitcher, throws hard just not sure where it will end up. Those guys arent fun to face at all, sometimes terrifying depending how hard they throw. Ill take the guy who paints corners all day long over the ones whose just as likely to put it in your ear hole as throw it right down the middle

Basebal - the stadium is as awesome as it looks in pictures. They also put it in the perfect location, something that you don't always get. It is right in the heart of the downtown bar scene. Price is why they have an open air stadium. The local tax option wasn't highly favored as it is, and everyone knew that once the Twins had a new stadium there was going to be a new football field to pay for...The Twinkies struggled with a poor GM for a few years and he emptied the kitchen for pitching. This year is also going to be a struggle - since Dedundo is a star pitcher for us - you can imagine how that will be... I am hoping this isn't the year they decide to fire Gardenhire - I think he is a good manager given a poor pitching staff.

I do like that they have it down town which seems easy to get too. I'm just waiting for the october snow out next time they make the playoffs lol. The Vikings really do need a new stadium at some point though I do agree cities should stop kicking in as much money as they have been in the past for the stadiums.
Dedundo actually got sent down to the minors a few days ago, their pitching definitely leaves a lot to be desired. If theyre going to blow up the roster like they did they should trade Mauer and Willingham too while their value is high then Morneau if he can rebuild his value and actually rebuild instead of that middle ground where you try and compete while rebuilding which never works.
Gardenhire is a good manager, no one will save that roster but he probably wont survive the rebuild unless they surprise the world and compete in the next year or two.

I forgot they sent him down - I saw that. It could be an interesting year - Gardy might have to do his best managing yet. I read they are hoping the pitching staff can get them to 6 on a regular basis - since they are pretty sure they will stay in games with the hitting they have, and the pen is solid. If they trade Mauer... you know they have tossed the towel for at least 2 and probably more years - and Gardy will be gone as well. Morneau actually had a pretty good year last year - not an MVP year - but not bad for a comeback either. I have yet to be impressed with the pitching and they have no one on the staff that inspires confidence they can lock up a win every 5th day. So... if they win 80 I'd be impressed.

Yeah - tough start! Opening day - 34 degrees and facing Verlander. The sad thing is the pitching was really good - but no clutch hitting. I think they left something like 12 runners on base...

Back on the subject of the coin, I'm not sure whether or not I like the reverse design... it just looks wrong to me, but I do like the fact that it's something completely different.

I don't think they have finalized the reverse yet either. I don't think they know exactly what the location of the lettering is going to be...

The lettering in between the seems does seem off. If they want to that shouldnt be too hard of a fix

I just saw the proposed layouts for the Hall of Fame coin and I was utterly disappointed about both the proposed designs and the reaction of the committee.
To be it looks like the Hall of Fame coin can't get past the image of the baseball. Their drawings and recommentations appears to be both drab and unimaginative. Certainly they is an image that is to be more inspiring that's going to be put on a coin than a baseball orientated in different ways.
I was thinking something more inspiring like an image of the World Series trophy, cross baseball bats with a glove and ball, or a ticket stub(s). To me that more interesting that a ball.
Granted you can't play the game without a ball, but where is the imagination of these people. If these are supposed to represent the finest coin design minds in the country that we are an unimaginative group.
