I will guess EF-40. I am guessing some of the missing of detail is strike related.

I kind of agree with EF also, it's more strike related than actual wear. But we'll see this is the toughest one of the latest bunch to grade iMO.

I'm editing to add I'm uping to VF35 (almost EF)!

IMO, this was one of the toughest if not the toughest to grade from all the Half Cents in this wonderful collection. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what was wear and what was strike.

looking at this coin again, it appears that at least the reverse may have been improperly cleaned. As for soft strike vs wear, although the reverse looks like a soft strike, IMO, it is true wear from handling. looking at the top-most leaves at 12 and 1 o'clock, the leaves have worn down evenly, which you most not likely see if it was just a soft strike. any other opinions on strike vs wear?

@westcoin: Upping your guess worked out quite well.
@panzaldi: This example displays weakness in many of the same areas on the wreath.

Thanks, I've done okay on most of these old Half Cents, and I've gotten within a point or so of the TPGs, but when I miss - I miss big! Gotta work on that, though I'd hope I wouldn't miss badly if the coin was in my hand, and I was spending my hard earned money on it, that's for sure!

Half Cents especially the draped bust series have quickly become my new passion and Bobby's timing on these posts of fantastic old coppers has been a fantastic help to me. I'm finding strike plays such a part in older coinage, and wear can seem likely yet the TPG's still grade MS. I still have a lot to learn in copper halves, but they sure are one of the more interesting coins the US ever produced (argubly).

This Half Cent grading seminar has been most enlightning, and you D0ubl3Eagle have been right on more often than not! Way to go!

Yay! Can't wait, love these coins, are they all from a single collection Bobby? Just amazing coins, so old and beautiful.

D0ubl3Eagle:

@panzaldi: This example displays weakness in many of the same areas on the wreath.

compare the example you posted to the one in the thread. I agree that there are soft spots in the one you posted that are similar to the ones on the posted coins, these soft spots where many times due to die wear. keep in mind that the dies are reversed so that the low point on the coin are actually high points on the die. these tend to wear out first, especially on those early copper dies. this will cause the low areas on the coins to show wear first. taking that into consideration, compare the high points on the 2 coins, there is clearly wear across all of the high points in the hair and cheek. the reverse shows wear not only on the high points but also the bow. I would say that the low point leaves at 12 and 1 o'clock and the "1" are most likely due to die wear or a weak strike, thus my grade of VF20. I must admit that this was more difficult to determine wear vs strike and should have looked closer at it.
