... actually, CoinStew, some non-commemorative "mule" 50 cent pieces were minted in 1977. According to McDonald there were also some 1988 mules. Exceedingly rare. Hence my "triple yahoo" smilie.

Coinstew .... btw, I wasn't inserting the 1977 and  in relation to your comment. (I hadn't actually seen your mention of 1977). I put it in purely for Enworb and Shane as Shane bought the 1977 COA the other day I believe. |

We have a winner! This coin jumped out visually when I opened the bag due to its very appealing lustre, an aged brilliance distinctly different from that found on the latest coins to hit circulation. Naturally I was thinking I may have found a delightful 70's or 80's coin, and while a 77 or 88 would be the total icing on the cake (thanks for your optimism Unicorn and Squire), I surely wouldn't be expecting to find one of those in circulation lol. The "wow" moment was when I turned it over to find 1969, or as ADMISLSE so aptly puts it, a 69. It's a pity the camera hasn't captured the fullness of the lustre and background sheen. That would be an intriguing prospect, although I'm not sure how you would go about determining a loose Yarralumla specimen from a garden uncirculated variety. From what I understand, all the ones remaining in covers have a dull appearance, although as for the other ~670?

I think are some little specific die chips or something. I know I've read an article in an Australasian Coin and Banknote at some point, but I can't remember which one.

The 2000 1969 specimen strikes for the Nuphil PNC were done on unpolished blanks - hence the dull grey appearance of them.
The coin you have pictured is most likely a coin from a broken up Mint set, broken up before the PVC cover could affect it and probably kept safely for a long time before being used as change.
Certainly a nice coin worth keeping.
