wert, can your software determine if the design elements are actually larger on the gray coin?
Or is the difference in size only at the cicumference?

Could this be a Texas penny? Wrapped in leather and hammered. Makes it slightly larger and loses the copper plating.

See the bottom of the link for an explanation of a Texas penny.

DBM, and Kevinc
If you look at the necklace of the Queen on both coins, it looks as though the normal penny's relief is higher than the gray coin...See the arrows...

Looks like zinc in colour, but it is not broadstruck (which it would have to be, if struck without the collar die). For a larger planchet to be struck in the 1-cent striking chamber, the collar dies would have to be dis-engaged. I too, suspect a post-mint removal of the plating by hammering. What does the rim look like?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the rim pictures show a copper colored coin. What does the rim look like on the gray coin?

The rims in the first 2 pictures that Fuzzy posted seem to have a bit of a "flair" to them as well -- are the edges straight across (exactly 90 degrees to the face of your coin) or are they on a slight angle?

Hmmm. Well, it looks like I have to agree with the posters who mentioned a hammer job... it sounds suspiciously like one. Too bad. It makes a novel addition to the collection though, at least for study and instructional purposes.
