My personal best ... Like really the best for 2012 was the 5oz ! penny  Great coin for a collector. Not really good to flip as big coins are not really gaining in price, but that coin is just amazing  |

I agree with sodude. Go for something related to the penny. Maybe a roll of last million pennies.

I remember someone mentioning that coins like the glow in the dark coin and the glass bug coins are novelties. I would have to classify this roll as less than a novelty but a scam. Numismatically the penny is important, yes but to say these rolls are the best coin of last year is wrong. These coins represented a cash crab. They were not the last pennies distributed as the Mint had intended. They became over hyped and over priced. Over all I personally would never choose to represent the best of 2012 with this roll. Just get a nice proof penny, or the silver and gold plated variant or the 5 coin set. At least with one of those you are getting a unique and rare coin and not one of 200,000,000 with a special hologram sticker.
Sorry to Rant, I don't want to hijack this thread from the best coin of 2012, but in my opinion the "special" penny roll does not even rate a mention.
The silver Titanic coin was one of my favorites from last year to and so under appreciated. It has some of the best engraving of last year and is still available at a fair price. The fact that it commemorates a Historic event that effected Canada and represents 100 years of history is nice too. I would not get the silver 1kg dragon coin. Amazing as it may be I don't think it represents good value and I think if you are doing this for your daughter, future value should be a consideration. I think to pay that much of a premium for this coin would be irresponsible as a gift for a child. As parents we need to leave them something that they can appreciate and that will appreciate in value also.
Again sorry for the rant. I think the 1812 gold coin was a good choice.

So far I have narrowed the list down to these contenders for the best coins last year :
- 2012 Canada Farewell to the Penny - 5 oz. silver
- Group Of Seven Series - I know the entire series is not a 2012 product but I think you have to count these coins as a set to fully admire the beauty of the coins.
- 1812 Gold 1/4oz Coin
- Silver 5 Penny Set
- 1/25 gold farewell to the penny
- Gold Maple Leaf Set - 5th Anniversary of the Million Dollar Coin (2012)
- Canada 2012 $5 Sterling Silver and Niobium Coin - Full Pink Moon
- Bank of Canada Hoard Coins 1912 to 1914.
And
- 1kg Silver Lunar Dragon. Although a great coin not really commemorative of anything Canadian and very highly prices. Are things like value and theme considered numismatic characteristics or should I consider factors like design, grade and rarity?
Edit - Forgot to add the: 2012 Canada $10 Fine Silver Coin R.M.S. Titanic. I didn't even consider this coin until mentioned here in this thread. Definitely one of the best of last year.

I think a roll of last million pennies would be really neat for a young person when they get to the collecting age. It would make a cool set to have that along with one of the coins made for collecting (the 5oz penny, the silver penny set, the gold penny, or the silver penny with gold plating).

Mr sodude, respectfully I can not agree. I did not get a chance to buy a roll when it came out. If I had I might agree with you, but to buy one now at the current selling price would seam foolish. There are so many great penny items last year. I think I will stick to the items listed above. I did buy a gold plated penny pendant for my mother and one for my daughter. That seams like a foolish thing to do also but at least they can enjoy it and wear it any time they like.

You're right, they are pretty expensive now. I guess it was one of the big winners from 2012 in terms of price appreciation along with the dinosaur coin.

As a collectable item, I absolutely love my penny rolls.
These will be most appreciated by the next generation that will never know what a penny was.
As the best coin, not even close.
My vote is for the Silver Plated Titanic coin. This was the first numismatic coin I bought and what brought me into collecting.
I remember how impressed I was with the image and colouring of the coin.

I don't know what your budget is, but I would highly recommend any of the Robert Bateman "Moose" series, depicting coin versions of portions of our famous Canadian artist's rendering of this majestic animal. I think when it comes to talking about coins any aspect or characteristic of a coin is fair game, including investment potential and profit potential. A lot of old school people hear will have you believe they are purist and strive for more honest conversation about coins like the days before the flippers. In reality the conversations about profit and getting the latest coins are always the most popular here. So discuss any aspect of coins. Your buying decision may be different than mine but don't be afraid to say a coin poses poor investment potential or is poor value. These are valid numismatic points. P.S. I like the silver plated Titanic Coin too, but the silver coin is a better coin. |

Hi guys,
I thought to continue this thread, rather then starting new.
I asking for the same advice as Sophie, although the coin that I want to buy for my son suppose to be issue of year 2007.
Since I already kept something dedicated for him (as 1914 HS gold $5 or 5oz Farewell to Penny), so I do not want to go for something very expensive, like 2007 Baby Set for $2000, but I search for some interesting, eye appealing silver coin (preferable Canadian).
couple of the coins that I consider to check:
2007 baby set with CD (nice silver dollar) - do not like the fact, that became rare because nobody wanted it.
2007 Snowflakes - nice, but nothing important, just gimmick with the Crystals.
2007 Silver Dollar "ABC" or "Rattle" taken out of set - yes, I want them, but can not find any.
2007 Coloured maple leaf - nice, but actually it Special edition of "bullion"
2007 CANADA "CELEBRATION OF ARTS" - could be, but why this coin "rare"?
2007 $8 coins - they nice, but oriented on eastern community
One non-Canadian issue, that could be good - 2007 Silver Proof Britannia - Anniversary edition, looks very good.
Will appreciate your advices, also please fell free to contact, if you have something to offer.

I have all of those except the baby coins but my personal favourite from 2007 is Joseph Brant Enamel (Thayendanegea) Proof Silver Dollar with enamel-effect. Issue was $129.95 and mintage was 5181.
The biggest drawback is that it's sterling so taxable.

Thanks, CC-Ottawa for opinion.
I will check this coin - yes, it is very good.
One of mine concerns about it - it "person-related" coin, I am not sure, that it could be given to the kid.
