If that's a fake mint mark, it's a tremendous piece of work. Could you show us the date?

Amazing pics. One more request: Can you post hi-res images of the entire obverse and reverse? Thanks!

That date and mintmark (diagnostically) are spot on.
This is very interesting...I'm stumped quite frankly!
If it is an added mintmark, it's good.

I have to think about this.

Brianmos, what sort of equipment are you using? If you're getting dSLR-lelvel, really huge images, I'd like a set if possible for me to play with in the Gimp.

That would be great if he can send hi-res images to you. This would be a "rock-the-numismatic-world" find if it turns out to be a U.S. Mint struck coin.

I'm not buying it that way; my current leaning is it's an attached mint mark with the visible horizontal striations around it employed as "camouflage." No gold was struck in New Orleans that year, likely because of the planned run of 20 Centavos which no US Mint had ever struck before. So no dies would have been ordered or produced. No 1907 New Orleans gold has ever been found, and given the reasons one might surreptitiously strike it, one would think at least a piece or two would have surfaced in the century since. It would have required collusion between two different Mints to happen.

Hey SsuperDdave. I can't send the pics via email because I'm a new member. I use a Dino Capture 2.0 1280 x 1024. It's a pretty standard camera you can get at any Jewelry Supply house. It takes nice closeup pics of Morgans that we sell on ebay. If you want I can send you or post my email address. Let me know. I'd be happy to send full pics of both side.

I appreciate all of the feedback. I would love to have this coin checked by some experts as opposed to just sending it to be graded. Any suggestions? Maybe a big coin show etc? Thanks again

Not a bad idea, if you have access to one. The major TPG's will be represented, not to mention you'd likely find individual dealers who are gold experts. It's be a good way to find out how exactly your coin was created.
