I am also saving one each of "P" & "D" for each year. I was able to get the first years through the direct ship program and put the rest in circulation. I am having to purchase the last two year at 2X face. I really like the reverse designs, but do not like having to try to read the edge for the date & mint mark. Sometimes need a magifiying glass and that takes a lot of time.

I like the 2012 best, but this year's design is a good one!

I just got a batch of 28 back from PCGS. 10 went MS-67, the rest went MS-66. I bought two 500 coin boxes and picked for quality. these were the 28 best. The 2013-D Position B was the most common variety in 67. 2013-P Position A was the toughest. All of those were 66s.

I really like the 2012 and 2013 reverses. They are the best of any recent issues. I just wish they would put the date and mintmark back on the obverse where it belongs.
What is Position A and B?

Position A and B is the orientation of the edge lettering on the coin. As the edge lettering was struck separate from the obverse and reverse, the orientation of the edge lettering is random.

I never paid attention to the orientation of the edge lettering. I hate edge lettering. Do the TPG's put this on the slabs? I can't believe there would be any premium for a particular orientation. Just asking.

they do. and its all a matter of creating new ways to collect.
If Position A randomly only has 12 MS-67 coins, while Position B randomly has 258 MS-67 coins- which one will sell for more.
that's pretty much why they do it.

Coin collecting is a fun hobby that doubles up as a great way to invest. I'm sure your grand kids will appreciate your thoughtfulness in your gift.

I agree this is a great looking coin. I do not usually collect this series but I did buy a few of each mint to add to my collection.

I plan on getting them but can't seem to buy any. I just don't want to drop money on a dollar coin.
Will banks have them in rolls?

I agree that the Sacagawea dollars are one of the best designed modern series of coins. Pretty, very artistic. Even when they tone, they still have a dignified look. Too bad they don't circulate. I don't think you will find them at banks. The banks only have the Presidential dollars. The Native American dollars are not minted for circulation anymore, so you only get them from the Mint...... at a very high premium!

Does the total population of position A and B vary much over 50/50 in each grade? Seems like in large populations, it should be if it is truly random. Is the lettering put on after coining? If so, I'd think a majority of the coins would be in the same orientation out of the coin press and not random. Then, only the action of pouring them in the hopper of the lettering machinery machinery would introduce randomness.

Will banks have them in rolls? My bank has rolls of dollar coins but doesn't order each design so it is the luck of the draw. Last year I got a roll of George Washington!

My jaw literally dropped when I saw the design for the 2013's.

in terms of what is minted it will be nearly 50/50 with whatever slight variance you can assign to randomness. in terms of what gets listed in the TPG's population reports- that's based on submissions which is a non-random and much smaller sample size. Some will be elusive in high grades and that will dictate price. I think out of 1000 coins I checked not one 2013-P Position A made 67. So based on the randomness of my sample- that coin was elusive for me.
