If the U.S. economy continues to improve, PM investment will no longer be the 'star' it once was. (downside).
Job availability and job security will improve. (upside).

I look at PMs as a Fear and Instability play (rightly or wrongly) and I believe there will be another period (probably more) of extreme Fear and Instability over the next 40 years. Unfortunately, until that period occurs my PM holdings won't be generating any income and possibly gains. This is one of the reasons I personally could never see move a huge percentage of my savings into PMs. Others probably have a different views.

I think if you look at the 3 year charts for silver you will see that silver had been going up and down by big amounts until October 2012. From that point onwards silver has been going down with no recovery.

 After the unsustainable climb during the second half of 2010 the fall was inevitable. The only question was how high the bubble would go before it popped. Now the question is how low silver goes before it stabilizes. Does it find footing at $20, $15, or does it drop all the way back down to $10. |

You pretty much hit it on the head there. Well more than likely do something stupid to spike it again but like you mentioned that would be a couple decades from now. |

I'm using this to invest in lots of ounces of silver.
Not really rounds since the cost of making them costs some money.
So I'm just getting regular plain bars.

I tend to save my dollar for situation like yesterday market episode and buy into it. Haven't make large purchase of PM for a while except for what I really wanted, like the Niue Island Fortuna Redux 6 oz. cylinder shaped silver and the Koi silver 'feng shui' silver coin also from Niue. I got good prices for those on ebay. |

The price would likely have been the same when silver was at $30 as when it is at $20. Don't get me wrong -- I bought one myself and love it, but I think it's really more of a "collectible" than a form of PM. To take it to an extreme example, it's sort of like calling a silver teapot made by Paul Revere "a purchase of PM" simply because it's made of silver... |

I stand corrected Barry,
It is a collectible item, limited edition to like 8,000 for the Koi, don't remember number for the Fortuna Redux. I am a sucker for this type of collectible with nice packaging, hoping over time these will gain popularity and price increase. Otherwise; would make a nice display pieces.

By the looks of the graph above, silver seems that it will trade in the $20 to $30 range in 5 years' time.
As a chartist, that is my reading of this information.

Which is why we need to distinguish between nusmismatic purchases and PM purchases when talking about buying opportunities due to PM prices rising or falling. I would love to buy some BU Morgan dollars in bulk, for example, but they just don't seem to go much below $50, regardless of how far silver drops. |

Some, perhaps not all, numis do change with the tide of spot price movements. I can attest to that, having very closely followed proof values over the last 5 years. It takes a much greater price diversion over a markedly longer time frame to notice the changes vs. bullion but I've seen perhaps a 20% price drop in the limited release proofs I tend to collect over the last 6 months or so. Those figures can't compete with the beating bullion is taking, but the price difference is reflected in the recent PM losses, nonetheless.
