SPP did explain how acid dipping and polishing of the high surfaces of the dies would give a few cameos for the first few strikes. Maybe they did that a more often than we think...
Packrat...Could you post pics of your cameos.. Everyone here loves cameo pieces..?

Nice coin Dev! Could you explain a little more on the acid dipping and die polishing and how that would cause the cameo appearance? I have a 1901 5 cent silver that seems to be a circulation strike, but has a cameo appearance, and I always wondered about that...

I can only speculate on the process seeing as SPP brought this to our attention.
1...If you treat the whole coin (in this case with an acid dip), you're whole coin becomes frosty to some extent. Now remember that all is reversed in the die process.
2...If you polish the highest surfaces (those would now be the fields of the coin),
3...and the bust (being the lowest surface of the coin) would now mainly remain untouched and frosty or 'cameod' in the few first coins.
The striking of many pieces would quickly loose the frost due to the impact force on the silver or nickel.
That's my quick take on this process anyway... SPP could probably explain in a better way....

Nice coin. Love the contrast with the mirrors and frosting... It would be an ultra heavy cameo, if it were not for the ear, upper crown and jawline being lighter.
Have you checked out the Perth Collection, on the PCGS registry? It will make your jaw drop to the floor. I have held most of those coins in my hands, at the pub at Toronto coin shows... I should tell the owner to get the rest of his coins photographed!!

How earily in the die life would this coin have been strike?

I don't see any DC's in it so I also wonder why it would be "refurbished",.?
....seeing as there are no listed specimens.
