They dont always have to pop. It exhibits the characteristics of a gas bubble versus a damaged die (or any other explination) for me. Someone else may have a different opinion. Also, seeing the reverse of the coin in some cases with this characteristic could be helpful.

Whether it is a die chip or gas bubble, it adds no value to the coin. Sorry.

Its a copper planchet coin. So it wouldn't be a gas bubble.

I am really surprised so many folks said gas bubble ,gas bubbles happen on the copper plated cents from 1982 till present anything before 82 was struck on a solid bronze planchet not a copper coated zinc planchet so this has to be a die chip
hope this helps Renard

Oops, of course Coop is right... Thats what I get for posting at 5:30am while waiting for the coffee pot to finish.

I ignored the year a bit... @renard - Its a Copper cent as its pre-1982. Gas bubbles on Zinc cents (1982-forward). So Jasper possibly has it right as a die chip.

The copper planchet coins stopped in 1982 part way through the year. The last part of the year till now, they use the zinc plated with copper. These have the problem with gas bubbles under the plating. The color of you image doesn't look correct. But is the raised area just something on the coin? The same color?

Based on the time I posted and made the same mistake, I am guessing the others were waiting for their first cup of coffee too

I would think that it may be a corroded die. I seen something similar on a an IHC (although it was located on the nostril) that I wish I would have acquired...she was a beauty.

The raised up area was not the reason, she was a real looker!
