Looking at trends....1947 P7 starts at $100 and a 1948 starts at $900. But go to an MS64 and a 1947 P7 is $6500 and a 1948 is $5500. Should the low end 47 P7s come up or what?

Be very careful of PCGS 1948 in MS63. See the coin. The counterfeit holder and coin are in this grade.

Oh I wish this coin was in a small Australian auction! I'm Canadian, I'm talking about my hometown which is outside of Ottawa. Has anyone here seen this sale advertised at all? Maybe I shouldn't be talking about it!

I would never think of bidding without first seeing photos and checking the certification number on the PCGS holder. I am wary about the fake PCGS coins going around, are these fakes replicating the original numbers on the holders as well?

Part of the reason I don't own a 1948 Dollar is what people have been talking about here, I am sure they are overpriced compared to their true rarity as they are the "glamour" coin of the series. It's like the 1930 Penny in Australian coinage, people still pay crazy money for that coin even as prices have come down quite a bit in the past 5-10 years. It may be a rare coin (around 1500 expected to exist) but you can typically find a handful of examples at every major auction here!

I also hear the American 1794 Chain Cent is pretty much always on the market.

Be patient....collect exactly what kind you want..ie white brilliant v toning....the silver dollars dates are very limited in number if you do not get carried away chasing varieties. Some years are tougher to find nice brilliant examples, such as 1938, 1945 & 46. Some years easy to find nice high end examples (MS65+) such as 1935 & 1949.

I do have some very nice silver dollars but for some time now I have been intrigued with putting together a complete silver dollar collection in the most worn possible condition - legible date though. I am old enough to have spent Canadian silver dollars at stores and I wonder how many hands a silver dollar, in that condition, had to have passed through and how such a large coin could be carried around in pockets and purses and used countless times in daily transactions. How difficult would it would be to complete such a collection given the BV melting over the last two or three decades?

This topic has come up here before. Supposedly, finding a very worn 48 is very hard to do. Good luck on this venture..

DEVLEC, did collectors become aware very quickly of the low mintage of the 1948 silver dollars and pull them out of circulation quickly?

speaking of poor condition coins...I'm putting together a 1938 set and here are my two lowest so far...G4 and VG8....it's amazing how a VF20 coin will go for as much as a AU50 coin sometimes, so I think there are a couple of collectors out there.......

Those are nice tripoli I have seen silver dollars that have been dinged up or holed but I don't think I have ever come across any that worn before!

OldCoinGuy...From what I've been told.....most 48's were pulled quickly when they were spotted late in that year. If you went to the bank early in the year,..all that they knew is that there weren't any for that year.

If you went very late in the year..Bingo... you got one..I think that I have a really worn one somewhere,...

....one day I'll get a pic of it in here ...

Thank you all for your comments! it is interesting to learn that the 1947s are scarcer than the 1948, as fewer were actually preserved! now I'm on the hunt for the 47s! any advice on where to find a reputable seller?

It's fun to see very worn silver dollars like that.
Imagine walking around with your pockets loaded with silver change like they did in those years.

Nothing beats the sound of silver coins jingling together. Such a rich sound..
