The half could be a really interesting subject choice for the liberty themed coinage if the Kennedy series was discontinued after 2014. They are mostly NCLT now but could prove to be a great collector coin in 90% silver similar to the platinum eagle proof $100 which have rotating reverse every year but are seldom seen since each coin is nearly $2000 in the 1 oz. size. That design series has had more hits than misses.

Fox: You should read Coinage or the other mags, they have been saying this for months. Mint officials were quoted on this at the big coin show in Chicago last month as well.
They should just eliminate the half dollar, cent and one and two dollar bills, all in one fell swoop. Make a bash out of it, celebrate the coins and bills with throwbacks like silver and copper composition, special designs etc. and then let them die a dignified death.
Add a two dollar coin, make a new 5 cent coin of nickel coated zinc or plated steel and move on.

You mean they (Mint officials) have been talking about ending the production of the half? I sure hope not. I see no reason to stop the productions of halves, because, as I said, the government still does make a profit off them. If they really do start considering this, I will be writing my Congress people to oppose such a move.

You know what would be a great idea for the special year,is to have the mint allow so many of the halves be minted in 40% silver and let the collecting public have a wrack at it! It would be a treasure HUNT. I'd say maybe punch out at least 100,000 out of say, 2,000,000! The government should release maybe one in every 1000 or so? Exciting or no? I can dream at least.-joey

The Half Dollars in its various forms have always been among my favorite coins. I think I have enough of the Kennedy halves including the Bicentennial design. I wouldn't be opposed to a design change but I don't know if there is any reason to change it.

I'm just about start a year and mintmark set of them too... A redisign would probably peak collector interest and cause retail prices to go up fo UNC coins...

Quote: A redisign would probably peak collector interest and cause retail prices to go up fo UNC coins. Maybe. I am thankful that I completed my Washington quarter set before the Statehood Quarter series began.

Jbuck, I just feel the need to say that when I was 10 years old and the State Quarters were coming out, I was trying to convince my mom to get rolls of the old Washington quarters from the bank to save because "they won't be making them anymore and THOSE will be the rare ones 'cause everybody's saving the new ones!" As with so many things, she didn't listen to me. I bet she wishes she had now.Anyway, re: halfs, I can tell you that when I was at Circle K I used to hand them out in change and people actually LOVED getting, for example, 55 cents with only two coins--the half and the nickel. I think if the design was changed to something more general--Liberty, for example, or a president or historical figure who isn't as "collectable" as Kennedy--the half would see renewed circulation. I used to get people turning down dollar coins, but never a half, and more than once I had people go "say, you got any more of those?" and trade me a pocketful of quarters for the fewer, lighter halfs--even after I said "sure, but you should know I check 'em for silver before handing 'em out."

Conder, I could be wrong, but didn't that end with silver coinage? It may just be an illusion due to size, but I definitely had people tell me they wanted the halfs because a set amount of money in halfs was lighter than the same amount in quarters.

No, go to the U.S. Mint website, and last I checked, the current half weighs as much a two quarters. The Mint's website will tell you the weight and other specs of each current coin denomination. I also heard that copper-nickel Ikes weigh as much as four quarters, but those seem heavier than four quarters to me, and halves feel a lttle bit different to me, than two quarters, but I'm not quite sure if they feel lighter or heavier. It seems different at times. Halves probably feel lighter because they are one coin and two quarters are two coins. Maybe its just one of those illusions. I've also heard rumors about SBA and all series of GD dollar coins weighing almost as much as three quarters. Not sure how true that is though.
