Based on seeing little or no rim and in some places almost no dentils my first impression is that it was shaved.

while it could be shaved, or spooned-- but that usually results in a raised rim, it is possible that it is legit.

This could be done with some wet and dry fine sandpaper and a degree of patience that wouldn't leave a bulged rim.
The weight of this coin is critical to determine if it is genuine IMHO

I fully agree that a highly-accurate weight measurement is in order, but the issue-appropriate completeness of the denticles and the slight rounding on the rim are very encouraging details. Waiting with bated breath for further information.

I don't think it has been shaved because it still seems to show the shear marks running across the edge created when the blank was punched out of the strip. Typically when someone shaves, sands the edge, or uses a lathe, they go around the circumference leaving marks that run around the edge not across it.

I ended up having a friend that runs a brick and mortar coin store send this coin to be looked at by both PCGS and NGC. PCGS graded it problem free VF20 but never made mention of the plain edge on the holder. Sent it to NGC and it came back VF25 with an Overton # 110 but no mention of the plain edge either. I got the receipt for the NGC submission and it was checked for variety plus, then typed next to that Overton/Plain Edge, but it wasn't checked in the box for mint error so I imagine that's why they didn't confirm or deny the error. So as of now I'm really no better off than I was before except I know it's a gradable coin. I'm also out two grading and shipping fees which all added up are more than the coin is worth so I'm not real eager to try again....

Wow, your dealer really messed up on that one Both PCGS and NGC require an extra fee for error attribution. If you do not check the box on the form and submit extra service payment, you will get the coin back with a normal grade label. The way I see it, the dealer owes you a free grading and error attribution for not properly doing his job the first two times

Thought I'd give an update on the outcome of this coin. It went back to NGC in the v.f. 25 slab. They cracked it, looked at it and sent it back in a details grade holder that says edge damage!! I thought they guaranteed the grade once they stabbed it? At least they didn't charge me to down grade it but I'm still not happy about any of it. On a more positive note I sent a few other coins in that came back with much better results like an 1806 half dollar that I cracked from an EF-40 PCI holder that came back as NGC EF 45! Also an 1805 dime I bought raw came back NGC G 6. Also did two Draped Bust quarters and two draped bust halves all bought raw on ebay and they all came back in righteous slabs. I don't have those yet but will try to get some pics up when they get here.:

They are dolts and nincompoops and in many cases wasters of oxygen.

You did well with the other stuff, though.

I still think it needs to be looked at by some GOOD Bust half specialists because I and not convinced it is the result of a damaged edge. I don't trust the TPG's with something like this.

If the edge isn't original it's a very, very good piece of work. I wonder how much weight such filing would take off the coin?

No, the edge lettering on these coins was made by rolling the planchets between two edge dies. The lettering was incuse on the edge so it was raised on the edge dies. There is nothing to "fill" with grease.

If it's "righteous," the only way it happens is for the planchet to never go through the Castaing Machine. They're known in the series, but maybe only a dozen or so.
