Five or so years back I decided I wanted a Charlotte and Dahlonega struck coins. Mostly just to say I had one of each. Interesting that the Half Eagles are less expensive than the Quarter Eagles. And the $1 gold -- well that's a whole 'nother story. Here's my two:

Very nice coin with a rare C mintmark but its slightly overgraded. I think XF40 would be a better representation.

CAC stickered it indicating that they feel it's worth 45 money but I don't find this coin strong for the grade. This piece appears to have an old, light cleaning, numerous contact marks, and wear more consistent with a 40 grade. By no means does that mean I wouldn't buy it at the right price; Just wouldn't pay the close to $3,000 someone might expect for a PCGS/CAC XF45.

Tremendous images, PH1221. Nice, original coin and a great addition to even the specialist's collection.

Their website won't show the sale price unless I register which I don't feel like...so do you mind my inquiring as I'm very curious what a straight retail buy went for versus auction archives...
Nice coin you've got there

Apparently strike quality is really inconsistent for this date. This coin does seem a bit worn overall to have earned an XF-45. Looks like a "40" to me.
Not too many examples have been sold at Heritage but over the last 6 years or so auction prices have ranged from about $1400 to $3450 in XF-40 and XF-45 grades. Interestingly, the $3450 price was for a PCGS XF-40 sold in 2008. That was a nice piece but that seems a bit excessive.

Beautiful coin, a gold coin from Charlotte is on my list of things to acquire "someday". I have yet to obtain Douglas Winter's book on coins from this mint. I will be ordering a used copy from Amazon soon.
