I have only just spotted this thread! Must be far too busy...... Excellent find, bet your stomach did a flip when they came up? Is this the one that had 2 pots, one was empty the other had about 1200 coins in?

No, this pot although broken would have been full from its estimated size. 1660 coins in this one!

What area did you find these in? Obviously not the exact location, just the area. Don't give me the location, I would be in the car and on the way with 'Eddy' before I had finished reading if you gave me that lol.

Now that does interest me, it's an area I have been looking at for a while now, along with others, especially round the Mildenhall area. Might have to get my old bits of paper out and see what I had pinpointed to 'hit'. Brill find though, congrats!!

Its hard getting land down this way.......really hard. I am just about to sign a farm up, but its the first for a year. Its got the remains of a Roman temple/later medieval church on it I suspect. I have contacted 'in person' hundreds of farmers this year but to be frank, I have been I have loads to say for myself, so I'll probably post plenty....just about to post pics of the encrusted coins I got through the mail this morning.

Have you tried buying a 'contract' with farmers? or better still contacting the third party owners that rent to the farmers? Might be worth you popping a post into the detecting forum to see how others go about gaining permissions - some of the guys come up with some good ideas. If you really struggle you could try working a border on land that is council owned, I do that regularly. If you get totally stuck, drop me a PM, I have plenty of permissions going nearer to me (Nottingham) - if you don't mind travelling of course. Not all turn up abc's but most turn up interesting stuff.

Apologies to collectors...I have asked for this thread to be copied to the metal detecting section and in future will restrict my comments on here to the coins I found. Thanks Metdet71! Always nice to detect anywhere different for a change. Theres plenty about down here, just nothing new like there was 3 years ago as the hobby is getting a bit hyped about all the treasure thats publicised nowadays. Fact is, a 100 acre farm is still about 5 years of detecting when done thoroughly, so what I do with the 6000 acres available to me is anyones guess... I try and find hotspots.!

It would be fine to post any ancient finds here, not many of the folks on the Ancient forum check the Metal Detection section often. I know I don't. Any none ancient finds should go to the Metal Detection section.
