Maybe I should be clearer on this.. I did not say they come out of the ground in that condition. They generally come out of the ground (when found in a hoard) thickly encrusted in green copper oxide deposits; as a result of them being next to other coins. Whereas a ploughsoil found coin will leach copper oxides into the surrounding soil, a hoard coin leaches these oxides onto surrounding coins/the pot. Some hoard coins do come out of the ground in a fantastic condition, it all depends on whether the pot was covered with a lid and how dry the soil was. A sympathetic cleaning method will remove this encrustation to reveal in most cases a very fine Roman coin.

Could you tell me the details of the coin you posted.
You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

The coin you have posted is in my opinion a modern copy - a discussion I have had before here. As not to stray away from your original post, what is the size and weight of your coin? It would also help if you could provide a clue as to provider of this coin, after all, if its a genuine item and the seller is as good as you say then it will do no harm. I do have a few things to say about your hoard find also but it would be a little uncouth of me to do so here so I will PM you instead with a little information that I have. You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

I haven't been able to find a match in the fake coin report. It does look legit to me. Also it appears to be from the Lyons mint.

I would rather you post your 'uncouth' comments here....I cannot receive PM's yet.
As far as the source of the coin, I feel no need to disclose to anyone where I buy my material. The dealer is respected and if you believe the authentic coin posted here is a fake, then I do not believe its fair to name him either as both he and I, and I would assume most members here can see it is genuine. If you firmly believe the coin is not authentic, then maybe speak to a moderator and ask that it be removed because it is misleading? Other than that...I do not know how to help. If it helps you to understand how people manage to buy hoard material, both myself and another member here have bought coins from a Gallic hoard in the past year...they are not difficult to find and when resold are often not sold as being from 'such and such hoard'.

Just been having a good look at a few of my copies that a guy I know makes and actually I agree echizento, it could be a good coin, the reverse throws me a little bit as does the OP.

Yeoldecoins, ok I will post, but first I have to post these comments. Firstly, It has been great to meet the genuine collectors and dealers on this forum, been an inspiration to me. Secondly, I support this forum and will continue to do so but will no longer be 'active'. as the saying goes, if there are sharks around get out of the water. Maybe we will never know the exact reason this coin ended up like this, still....an interesting little piece of bronze. If anyone bumps into a brockage expert please let me know. Oh and your expert opinions on ancient coins will be sadly missed Big Kev... Edited by Yeoldecoins
