Thanks pish! In my earlier ancient collecting days I would have probably skipped this one too if it was among a lot or something. Quote: I have a grotty slug that has something resembling a Ostrogothic eagle but sadly I think its more likely some kind of barb rather than my first Ostrogothic. Forgot to address this but I think you should post it anyway bobby Definitely something I'd be interested in seeing!

Nice find, VK... COI is Metlich, Michael A. The Coinage of Ostrogothic Italy. London, 2004.

The eagle has a style about it that has always reminded me of some of the Ostrogothic eagles we see. I've picked the details out here, its only 9mm but looks to have lost a bit of meat: Very similar to this Theoderic I think.

Possibly an imitative CONSECRATIO issue of Claudius II?
The style is unusual.

Its pretty similar, for sure. Only thing is the direction of the eagle's head and what looks to be letters on the reverse of yours. Can't really give a 100% verdict on it. Might also be a barbarous Consecratio.

Quote: Possibly an imitative CONSECRATIO issue of Claudius II? That is usually where I end up when I try to ID it. Never 100% happy with it though. Drives me crazy when I can't reach a reasonable ID - need to stop acquiring these low grade head scratchers

The ostrogoth are all anepigraphic, so that must be a poor attempt by an unofficial mint. Legends garbled or poorly engraved - perhaps they put DIVO CLAVDIO by accident.

Thanks guys! Wee little thing too, at 15 mm (ok not super tiny but smaller than I expected!). I think it deserves extra points for depicting King Athalaric himself on the reverse, as opposed to a monogram or just his name in a wreath (not that I wouldn't want an example of either ). What would be even better imo would be a follis of Theodahad with his portrait on the obverse but that's a wallet-killer.

Note the fashionable barbarian moustache Theodahad is sporting.
