I could never understand my buddies buying a new box of baseball cards every year, and just putting th on a shelf.. Thousands of dollars worth of cards in a sealed, cellophane wrapped boxes that just sit on shelves. Is that collecting ?

I like the unopened mint set bags and boxes from 1968 through the '80's. I'm not sure they're worth a big premium but being the first to see the coins is of some value to me. Most of these sets aren't picked over too badly but you can't find something like an unattributed 1970-S sm dt any longer except in the sealed containers. PL's are also getting a little more difficult.
I tend to just compute the premium and add a little to that to arrive at the most I'll pay. I usually get outbid on the higher premium packages.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

It actually isn't a bad plan for baseball cards with how hard they are to keep pristine. Instead of gambling on which ones will be worth it you can wait a while and know whose panned out when you open it. Someone opening a 2003 box with a Miguel Cabrera rookie card in there has a nice find right now. Then again the cards market got so watered down that its very specific for which ones it needs to be |

I do not know baseball cards, but I trust what basebal21 says is correct because it does make sense, more so than it does for coins (even though cladking has a good point as well). It is not anything I would care to do, but I appreciate the opportunity to see it another way.

I have seen original boxes opened that have every set sealed. All with no evidence of having been exposed to humidity enough to actually accomplish causing the gum to seal. That amount of humidity would certainly affect the envelope as well. That aside. The difference here between the baseball cards and coins is this. Way too many of the coins back then had milk spots and other things going on for me to want to buy them sight unseen. UNLESS I was there when one of those original shipping boxes was opened. That would be the only way I could reasonably believe that the sets had never been gone through. Then I may pay a slight premium. |

I definitely wouldnt do it with coins with how they come in mint sets. You could apply the same logic, but we all know they wouldnt store anywhere near as well as cards do. Im much to curious/inpatient to leave them like that for enough time to appreciate anyway. I cant even leave things in mint sets much less sealed up never seeing it. |

Hmmm. I should drop a mint set in acrylic and let it set in there then send it to basebal. |

Well I dont have a bandsaw which would make it all the more entertaining. Theres a good chance it would end in me shooting the case off at the range if other methods failed  |

If it looked anything like Han Solo did in Star Wars Id probably look at it for about 3 seconds before just skipping to that lol
