Re: the 'scratch' on the neck.
Every coin design has what are called 'focal areas.'
These areas are where one's eyes are drawn first.
With the Barber design this is where my eyes go first:

The LIBERTY and surrounding hair is the primary focus area.
[A secondary focal area would be the leaves of the wreath.]
The neck scratch is as far away as possible and is not distracting to me. Had the same scratch been in the areas marked by the black lines it would have been a distraction.
An AU coin has been circulated and is likely to have a few minor abrasions. Bottom line: NOT a problem.
" I looked at a PCGS Barber from 1898 with AU50 grade and thought they looked alike "
Denken, you choose this instead of the slabbed example. I
think you did very well. Will this be a type coin or part of a set?
$345? Yes, a hefty amount of money. But well worth it.

Edit: the cheek looks very free of distractions.
Also, the multiple pictures at slightly different angles
afforded enough examples to study.
I should add that the neck scratch, had it been on a quarter or a dime, would be more of a problem.
