I have a very good idea who it is ..... I was hoping someone might show me how I am wrong. Admittedly the coin (sestertius) is a bit rough. But I strongly believe it to be worth at least one more zero on the price tag.
I am going to go to bed and try and forget this ever happened.

The legend sure does look like ORDIANVS doesn't it? What was it attributed as? I am guessing APius based on the bust. Kind of looks like him. Everything does look pretty close to Gordian I though. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/...C_0012.2.jpgI hope you get lucky! |

No luck at all ......
I was interested in watching a Hadrian Dup. while the ten minutes were counting away I decided to watch the other coins as they 'closed'. Nothing special really just some partially cleaned AE's of the usual guys.
Gordian III. Except that one doesn't look right does it ....... Too much room for the G
Instead of bidding I fiddled a minute thinking. Only as the last seconds expired did I realize.
Oh god ...... I just watched a Gordian I (or II) sell for ten bucks !
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
I realized the 'horror' when I decided I could read the crucial letters (IANVS AF) on the right hand side.

I can only imagine the gut wrenching feeling you have, or the seller if he finds his mistake after he sends it off. I wonder if the buyer knows what he has won?

Believe it or not something almost as bad happened 3 years ago (same seller too)
I had been watching a sestertius with emperor in quadriga reverse. ID was Severus Alexander and legend was obscure. I kept saying to myself that does not like like Alex ......
Not until about 15 minutes before the close did the bulb go off over my head.
Elagabalus in quadriga ! The 'painted boy' emperor who thought he was the sun god !
The only emperor with the description 'worse than Caligula' What a find !
With 3 minutes to go suddenly I suddenly lost my internet.
The Gods can be cruel ....... It sold for $45

Well ....... "whatever some fool is willing to pay !" If you can even find a Gordian II (I believe it is the second) you will generally pay through the nose ! I have not priced them of late nor do I feel my stomach could stand to right now. Sear lists $600 in F. While this one is only partially cleaned (which is why it got misidentified) it appears to have some room for improvement. Certainly more than a hundred dollars ..... The best analogy might be you finding a 1795 US Large Cent ID'd as a 1798 and the asking price being $50. You hesitate for 30 seconds and while you puzzle over it I hand the 'man' a General Grant and snatch the coin from the table in front of you ......... "Thank you very much !" |

Well I did buy some things from 'Antonio' after all. A few uncleaned Ae's ...... nice stuff for the money. I haven't purchased from 'my friend' in a few years.
I finally paid up yesterday and was surprised to find a very friendly personal message in the email this morning.
Just letting me know the items were shipped and giving the date and tracking numbers. But it was the pleasant tone of the 'note'. Obviously he had taken a moment to write the message and say hello. It's nice when people remember who you are isn't it ?
I wrote up a quick reply and thanked him for the prompt shipping and personal note. While it was somewhat rash of me I decided to inform him that I had just started following his listings again last week and that I had been missing for awhile because he had been getting such impressive prices (well I am a cheapskate !).
And by the way ...... "Did you ever notice you sold someone a Gordian II sestertius for $10 ?"
Well it has been 9 days and I didn't think I was 'ratting' or otherwise trouble making for some very lucky buyer.
The response two hours later
" OHHHHHH my GOOOODDDDDDDD!! How can we do this mistake? "
Apparently the lucky winner is blissfully unaware of this treasure in his 'pocket'.......
He hasn't even paid for it !
I was told by the proprietor that he would wait a few more days for payment. If not ...... well then. He assured me that when you pay you get ! But patience does have limits.
Hard to argue that point.
I sent him back a message telling him that it was my respect for him as an honest and reliable seller that prompted me to tell him what I did.
'Oh and by the way ...... if he doesn't pay ...... I will pay you double !'
Who knows

Antonio is a fun guy and always a pleasure to do business with. I try to keep an eye on his postings because something will occasionally slip through the cracks as with this Gordian II and you will get a really nice price for it.
The exchange you posted did give me a good laugh though. It is kind of amazing that no one really noticed it until the last second.
