Even with all the tourist that come here to Cape Cod from all over the country, I only see P and D mint marks.

Here in San Antonio Texas, I see mostly Denver mints. Philly mints are incredibly rare! And S mints? They still make those for circulation?

In Georgia it is mostly P, with some Ds. I keep every S mint mark I find since almost never find any.

Odd no one has noticed that the S mint coins are proofs ONLY. You will not be finding S coins in change unless someone spent their proof sets. In Chicago just D and P coins naturally. Mostly always D.

In Utah we get lots of D and S mint marks and very few P. And S mint marks are circulated coins, I see way too many of them for them to all be proofs. BTW where are coins without mint marks made?

Hiya Just Carl,
Currently being minted - yes San Francisco strikes proofs but San Francisco was minting business strikes in the not too distant past. Just looking at the coin facts section of this site, you can see that there were quite a few 1974 S Lincoln Cents ( and prior and other denominations) that were business strikes.
I do occasionally find S mint marks while searching coin rolls here in Orlando, but they are pretty rare. I have found one nickel and maybe a dozen or so pennies. It would be nice to have a larger population of coins from that mint available in my neck of the woods. You would think that with Disney World and other amusement parks here that a larger variety of coins would be available. Heck - I find more foreign coins in rolls than I do S mint. I have a box of pennies I got from the bank today and just scanning through them this afternoon I found two dimes, four canadian pennies, a british penny and five wheaties, but I haven't yet found an S mint mark in this box. Still looking of course, so there may be one in the box - maybe.
Laters - Tony
Well, I just found a 1969 S Lincoln in this box. But I have found 6 wheaties including a 1920 in the same amount of searching in this box.

Here in Michigan I mostly find 80% P and 20% D, very seldom S even in business strikes. However I found a 1973 S Lincoln I swear at one time was proof.

Lucky. I've found hardly any P minted coins ever, except when I was in Washington D.C. Btw where do you get boxes of coin rolls? The bank I'm guessing?

Living in Colorado, most all coins are Denver mint.
Laying on my desk right now are 22 coins. 21 are Denver, and one, a 2005 nickel, is Philadelphia.

In Chicago I would say it leans more towards D. And finding anything with an S is a good day, not that it's worth anything more, but is still fun. I also keep every S coin I've come across, which is probably less than 100 coins.

OK, OK so I'm living in the present and forgot about the S mint coins in the past. Just don't see them to much any more. For many reasons people take all S mint coins out of circulation and hoard them. I remember not long ago at a flea market where a dealer was pushing for people to buy rolls of S mint coins. Nothing special but he was asking way, way to much because they were S mints. I just went and looked at a pile of change I have. I'm one of these people that puts all change in a big can at the end of the day. I sporatically looked through that and found that about 90% were all D mints. Looks like we've been invaded by Denver. Odd since Phoili is so close. Maybe they don't like people from Chicago.

Why do some Philadelphia coins have a P mint mark and others have no mint mark?

If I had 50 posts I give you the straight link to the US mint's answer. So since I can't do that yet, here's how I found it. I used yahoo search engine, type "P Mint Mark" then click on th US mint's link. I think it was the first one.
