Like someone else mentioned, no need for them to confiscate gold, when they can digitally print gazillions of dollars. Besides, the US gold floodgates have been opened with our gold flown to the East.

The U.S. government will take your 401k's and IRA's long before they will come after your gold.

Back then, gold was money much more directly... so the gold seizure was probably more comparable to something like "the government has mandated that all physical cash be deposited in a bank account". Sure, it's still unpalatable, but you haven't lost any real value because of the ever-encroaching G-men. Still, I can't see what's wrong with dumping all your money into one commodity!

I don't blindly trust the government or any other large institution.

The government can do anything it wants if we let it.

I read somewhere that gold nanoparticles have an ld50 of 2000 milligrams per kilogram, so given my current weight I should be able to eat a little more than 6 ounces of gold without dying. I guess if I ever acquire more than that, Uncle Sam will be able to get his red white and blue hands on it, or I can just gain more weight so I can eat more of it (McDonald's three times a day should do the trick.

Yeah, it has a lot of health benefits, but be careful not to OD on it..

Here's another idea. If you have fillings, replace them with gold ones. They last longer, are safer than amalgam, and I kind of doubt you'll have to give them up.

Maybe

I do not pretend to be anywhere expert in PM/numismatic issues as most on this board, but I'll throw in my 2 cents. And my opinion may not be worth that, but here goes;

First off, the US Constitution would encounter a major stumbling block to any policy to confiscate gold from private civilians. Even if such a policy took the form of an Executive Order, that would only encourage an absolute barrage of lawsuits and consitutional challenges. If you don't think so, just look at the fight we had (have?) just trying to make changes in US Healthcare policy. I'm sure most of the world can't believe the fight that ensued over such an issue. And that wasn't a "confiscate" policy.

How about guns? For those of you in the US, could you imagine the storm that would erupt if a policy was floated to actually confiscate guns in the US? Law Enforcement coming to the doors of millions of citizens, and demanding that they be handed over on the spot? Wouldn't happen without a heck of a pushback.

No, confiscation would not work politially or practially in the US. So I would not worry about gold confiscation. And there's no way to track it, register it or know if you have any or how much. (as the laws are now)

What's more at risk are IRAs, 401ks etc. If you want to worry about something, worry about that. And the Government wouldn't have to "confiscate" anything. But they wouldn't just TAKE your savings. Because as I said above, confiscation wouldn't fly.

How would they seize your assets? TAX IT. Tax earnigns, or assets over a certain amount. If they don't want anyone to have assets beyond, say $500,00, then they could TAX at a 100% rate any asset above $500,000. It's that simple.

Constitutional and politically viable if done at the right time.

Don't worry about gold confiscation.

Already happened in New Orleans after Katrina and you heard not a word about it in the MSM. The only thing you can be certain of is that those in power will take whatever they want if they think they can get away with it. PERIOD.

John Hutch,

They can't take what you have in your "hiddy hole"

I might add, I would not keep it in a bank deposit box.
