I had a Duh moment in 2012...the only year I decided NOT to buy my normal 5 silver sets....I just bought two LE silver sets instead.... I did get 5 of the 2013's and just bumped my 2013 LE's to four ordered Expanding on your reporting the 99,882 final mintage of the 25th Annie set...that S mintmark MS coin is a gem in the making. Granted it has already been selling for $220-250 in MS69 for awhile but this is the lowest burnished ASE ever...hands down...if you can grab any on the "cheap" then grab 'em

Any guess on which of the above mentioned coins will be "SOLD OUT" next? The selling rate on some of these set is very low.... what's the determining factor for the mint to end a product?

Quote: So the fact that nobody wants them , makes them collectible now ?
No, it makes them collectible later. Numbers like this override my derision for most Moderns. Mintages of less than 100k will be solid investments if you can keep them in the family for a couple of generations. Coin collectors used to get that; instant gratification is creeping even into our great hobby these days. No Modern achieves instant stardom. It was near a hundred years before a Morgan dollar was worth much. Low-mintage Mint stuff, especially silver, will appreciate nicely if you've got the long view.

Maybe it's just me but anything that takes a hundred years (or a couple of generations) to be appreciated isn't on my shopping list.
If a product hasn't gone anywhere in 5 years then it wasn't a smart purchase.
I am referring only to investment purchases not those as part of a collection. Two different beasts. Collections are for enjoyment and their price appreciation is secondary at most.
I have collections and I have coins purchased for price appreciation.

The line btw collecting & investing sometime got blurred.
From the price/value appreciation angle, I would see 3-5yrs as the optimum time (looking back at some special issue of US mint coins). As for collecting sake & pass down to next generation, then price appreciation (also considered store of value) doesn't take top priority over the reason/meaning of the coin being pass down.
I do have to agree with SsuperDave that if coin collecting is here to stay, then US coinages with mintage of less than 100K should retain/appreciate in value over the long run.
Anyone else think differently?

Recently, anytime I place and order with the mint I add a few Dollar Sets to it. It's only a buck more than the sold out W was selling for and you get 5 dollar coins with your soon to be lowest mintage W ASE....I've got 4 more on the way (added to my LE Proof set order) I think I'm now around 16 2013 Dollar Sets (added to my 15 2012"s) Just sayin'...

I like this line of thinking from Mr Foxwoods and SA, that you flip some but you also have a collection you enjoy but also price appreciation.
I am pretty much in the camp that one's coins should, or least buy coins, that will appreciate in value so that you can profit on them down the road.
Now granted, most coins just dont appreciate, you have to contend with silver and gold prices that are flux, and cycles of supply and demand and popularity.
I also agree that low mintage numbers do NOT guarantee that a coin is going to go higher in price. Heck, that also applies to even antiques.
So I think you pick coins that look great, coins that are a unique series and I think you do gauge price action in coins.
That said, I think if someone was every year selectively buying from the US Mint alone, over time they will see one heck of price appreciation in their collection.
anyways great thread here!

I just did my tax and got some refund. I have about $500 to spare, now here are some of my options to buy: 1) A copper coin sorting machine to sort out copper cents, to accumulate copper cents to sell for profit to buy coins I like. 2) Buy silver ( ATB pucks, 90%, world bullion, etc) 3) More 2013 Unc. $1 coin sets (already got 4) 4) More 2013 Mint set (already got 10) 5) More 2013 LESPS (just ordered 2) 6) Wait for Kennedy special set 7) Wait for 2014 ATB pucks What would you do if you are in my shoes?

It's hard to recommend what's best for someone without personal knowledge about that person's unique circumstances. You will have needs (coin sorter) and ideas (Unc. Mint sets) that are different from mine. Nothing wrong with either person's ideas.
That said.....I do not see the potential for the 2013 Unc.int set and I would defer any funds into another on you list. Yes, the SET has low numbers but the coins do not....many millions of some and billions of others have been minted. The N.A. dollar has pretty low numbers though...but that is also in the Annual dollar set
.. The Annual dollar set has a very low mintage coin in it (maybe two).
...The LESPS has two low mintage coins in it...set numbers are limited
...the pucks are low mintage by definition but probably not on every collector's list yet (they are on mine)
...bullion has potential
...Kennedy set is very interesting but probably more towards the fall time period
My opinions only
