My opinion?

I can't wait to see it from your lens.

It will be a challenge when I try and photograph it.

This is a good excuse to learn axial lighting if you don't already have a setup.

CB- I love that toner. I just received a DMPL 1881-S from paleoguy45 yesterday. He was dead-on. It really is DMPL, not that I doubted him. I also missed it for the "28 days of" thread.

Here's a shot showing the DMPL features:

darth morgan if you think its dmpl, send it in to NGC or PCGS and have it get a dmpl on the holder. Their are many PL morgans that I've seen that looked dmpl

I think it would get the designation. At the very least it should get PL. I probably will send this one in when I get a group together. It's my favorite date/mm Morgan.

Nice Morgan DM!

I'm on the fence about using Axial lighting, or CaptainFwiffo's "smile-based technology" that is discussed in this thread.

Fwiffo's setup is - to me - functionally similar to axial in that it achieves the near-perfect vertical orientation of the lighting, otherwise impossible with a lens in the center of the frame. That's the key to axial lighting.

No offense Darth Morgan, but as somebody who is working on a PL/DMPL set, that is nowhere near PL nor DMPL. The 1881-S is a very common year to see PL coins and that has nowhere near the levels of reflectivity nor contrast to be expected for even a PL coin from that year and mint. I have a very nice 1881-S graded PCGS MS64 that has far more reflectivity and contrast than that and it does not have the designation. They're tremendously tough on 1881-S's, as well as a handful of other dates in the series.

It is the lighting. That's why I'm going to buy 2 IKEA Jansjo goose-neck lamps to improve my images. I won't be able to capture DMPL or PL. It's an iphone, after all. There's only so much it can do. It wouldn't surprise me if NGC didn't designate the coin. My '79 didn't make the cut either. I'm more hopeful with this coin, though. I can see why they would be tough on the '81-S too. They are known for being gems. No offense taken, chasingtailbar.I always appreciate honest assessments.

Got the coin today. I will post some pictures soon (I don't have an axial lighting set-up yet - so just regular shots, for now).

Toned coins are a whole different level of Coin Photography, it's very tough to get the colour into the images. I did take one image that will show all of the colours, but it has a huge glare.

In CaptainFwiffo's thread that I linked above, he mentions he is able to remove the glare off the slab in Photoshop. Does anyone know how or if this is possible using the free program; "GIMP"?

Here's another attempt, which shows the toning a bit better, but I lose the luster. The image quality isn't as great either, unfortunately. I also took some whole slab shots.
