Coin looks great. Your explanation of the VAM is excellent. Is it strange that a dealer has two of these rare coins for sale and does not realize it?

Great story Dave. All your stories are good, I especially liked your Baltimore report.

HI dave, Just read the story about the VAM you found from Gainesville Congrats! I have a similar story with that same company. I bought a coin from their website, and when I got the package there was a check with the coins, and when I called confused they explained that the website price was wrong and they had refunded the difference. never had that happen before. Every penny counts ;)

I saw one that would be a Top POP in their inventory also but the grading company kinda scared me off and I can't tell by the pictures if it will cross or not, it would be 1 of 1 and in the same price range you mentioned above

Well, I can tell you that Gainsville has just gotten the best advertisement that can get. A respected member of this group giving them Kudo's. I will go and check out the site and see if I can help repay for his honesty, good will and just for being an all around good dealer!

Wonderful story! I read this story and said to myself, 'Think I'll try to VAM one of my dollars today'. First coin out of 16 turned out to be the "1921-D VAM-1B1 Capped 'R' Die Break!" Thanks for inspiring me SuperDave!

How does the "e" in "we" look? There's a variant of that VAM with the e missing due to a strikethrough.

Weak, but present. It's the EDS version of the coin. The entire 'STATES OF' and 'od We Tru' is entirely flat and only looks outlined. Very strange for a AU coin.
Thanks for asking!

WOW that's interesting. I pretty much (long time ago) blew off the 1921 Morgan dollar off because of the number minted, but now I wish I had all the ones (10 or so) I gave my little brother when I joined the service. Currently, I've got a few VAM varieties but really need to get a handle on them and fully cataloged. Ben

I need to see that coin. How's your picture taking?

My picture taking is horrid, my flatbed scanner isn't too bad though! I'll scan it tomorrow at work.

Always hard to show 'flatness' with a flat bed scanner, huh? You should be able to tell that the bottom serif of the first 'S' still has some depth, but the top of the S is flat against the background. The 'In G' has some depth as well. The 'A' is totally flat with no depth what-so-ever. Let me know if you need a different DPI scan.

Wowser. I almost think that's a strikethrough grease - I see flatness to the strike of the wing's top edge, as well. If it were wear, the other edge would be just as flat, and it isn't. Very neat.

Now I'm baffled. I never looked at the front once I realized what VAM it was. Now that you mentioned the flatness, the front is showing the same effect. The date is flat against the surface, yet no real sign of significant wear. The stars are just as flat as the rest of it. Notice the 3d effect of the hair with the lighting, and the absense of any lighting on the date. Here's the mint mark area. Note on all of these pictures that the denticles around the edge are complete and not worn. Also notice the legs of the eagle has good detail.
