LOL, blackandgold, my first thought was that is not a real quarter, those numbers are just plain wrong. So technically, we are correct: it is not a circulating 1916 SLQ .

(Gotta take my wins where I can...)

Yep it's a Pattern Coin - It is in the Smithsonian Numismatic Collection.

Thought I'd try and trick some of you!

But I see you guys are pretty sharp... Here is the reveal, g048406 did nail it correctly.

It is a Judd-1796a (old) Judd-1988 or Pollack-2048

This pattern rates a Rarity-8 which means that only two or three are known. Because of that I thought it might fool a few of you.

Lesson - don't outright dismiss a coin that is unusual looking you could have a rare pattern in hand and not know it. I have a strange looking piece myself. I have never been able to get anyone to commit to what it is, I will try and shoot some photos and post it here very soon, maybe one of you has seen it or one like it before. I'm guessing what I have is a gaming token, or a really rare gold test pattern in bronze/brass - if I'm lucky.

This is an easy one. The Eagle is just flying so the wings are going to be in different locations all the time.

Can you imagine how stunning this design would be if the US Mint would strike it in high relief for the 100th annivesary?

On a quarter sized gold planchet

However in todays day and age of policital correctness I doubt that they would approve a nude MS Liberty on anything.

I only wish! This piece is "technically" all of ours. It is part of the Smithsonian National Numismatic Collection.
