can you tell us the circumstances of how and where you came to acquire the piece?

Might give a better starting place.

You might want to take it to a place to get it tested to see it's made of as well. That could add something.

EDIT: Also, are there any other markers on the edges?
Weight? Dimension's?

Anything else that could help?

It was bought out of a pile of coins in the old part of the city of athenw , the person had no idea how it got there , And to tell you the truth it could be from any patr of europe.
At some point I thought it might be a button of some sort but even a sleeve cuffling but the image ingraved is on booth sides .
Iwill test the Metal to see what it is.

THANKS for everyones help. The funny thing is you see here coins with almost nothing on them and can be identified

Iwill keep looking .

Since no one else has mentioned it I'll toss in the way out idea that it might be a signet for sealing wax.

It doesn't seem like it has any connection points, but here is another head scratcher topic... https://goccf.com/t/167455

Those are round but it's the best idea I have.

"unidentifiable coins" - https://goccf.com/t/170993 Those took us less than 20 hours, it's the ALMOST in front of "nothing" that makes it possible

As the post I linked to showed the 'tokens' had different things for both sides.

same thing for both sides means less ware on it.

if you read the thread I posted, you will see it says the tokens have different things on eartheir side.

Could possibly be an old family heirloom. Maybe a crest and this coin/medal was specially made. Could be a one of a kind.

There doesn't really need to be a reason. It could just be a keepsake to pass on down the line.
