They didn't immediately open the rolls. They were opened long after...when they needed quarters to be opened. It's not my fault someone turned in the coins that were worth more than face. Sorry to offend some of you by giving these quarters a home. Didn't know the feedback would be portrayed this way...

I think some of you folks are being a bit high-handed. Some guy gives 40.00 to a store, they happen to be silver and someone else discovers this. That's it, that's all. Playing "what if" to test someone's moral values is stupid and trollish.
I've seen this kind of thing happen a couple to times when people reported they got lucky.
The people doing it should stop doing it.

Westernski================== Quote: My comment was not about what was the legal aspects of this but what was the morally correct thing to do. A single, or a few silver coins, in a roll would not raise a big red flag. But four rolls of nothing but silver quarters? Something's fishy. Come on man!
When informed, some people would return the coins, some would take the "too bad, so sad" route.
Personally, I have a conscience. I like that. My thoughts are for ALL BAG ROLL BOX HUNTERS. Collective morality opinions Please ================ Should I return my LOWBALL(s), Morgans, Peace(s), ASE(s) 2001, Buffalo Indian Dollar, 2001 Buffalo Commemorative, and several .940 Ikes etc.,etc., back to my Branch Bank? More to the point. Anyone care to say they ( personally) have returned Silver back to the BANK? I will say I am 90% sure I have spent or DUMPED (some) .400 Ikes, just to get rid of the GREASERS === on my first bag. It was my ignorance. I am 100% sure I dumped about 100 Grease Filled Die coins. They looked awful on Obverse == near DMPL on the Reverse. . Believe I could have sold them for up to many hundreds on ebay as Error coins. It was my ignorance. No way I will ever pass the conscience test with BoK

TC3=========================== Quote: he bought all 40 dollars worth and gave them to me.. I was speechless! That's over 500 dollars right now in silver. I have no idea why someone turned them in for face. Nonetheless, they have a home now! Happy for your find. Wouldn't worry too much about morality testers. If (went) a good thing falls their way === That will be their own personal test. Maybe then they will come to the CCF and share their good conscience with us all.

In your original posting you said your GF's mom said "a guy brought in 40$ in quarters to cash in and she opened them up to put them in the register and saw they were 90% silver and she bought them"
Then you said later they were "opened long after they were found".
It can't be both.

======>It can't be both<========. You are 100% correct. I guess you have nailed him. Enough? I caught TC3 mistake === also. Personally I place this individual (the seller of the coins) with the Lazy, Ignorant, Stupid, Uninformed, or maybe a thief. At least he was not someones Gran' Kid. Advice for the newbies. If you get a wind fall on AG === or AU === just keep it to your self.

I went into a bank about 7 months ago and got 5 rolls of halves. 97 of the 100 coins were silver. I look at it this way, Whoever turned them in made a mistake. Nothing I can do about that. All I know is someone is going to get that face value silver. Might as well be me. It never even crossed my mind to feel bad about that!! Great Score TC3! Enjoy it. I would!!

westernsky.... Yes, she opened the quarters when they needed the quarters, not immediately. That's what I meant in my original post. Sorry, I was excited. You're really trying to bash me about this and it's quite childish. Holy cow....

I am not "bashing" you about this. If you take it that way then you need to go back and reread every post I've written in this thread.
I hypothesized some situations where if coins were mistakingly cashed in accidentally (or by a thief), and the panicked owner (or the police in case of a theft) inquired about them what would people do IF they knew exactly what happened to them.
I think that the answer from most people was "too bad, so sad". If that is the group you and your GF's mom are in then so be it.
As a society most really could care less how the coins got there. All they know is someone else's misfortune is not "their" problem. They have the coins, screw the guy that that may have accidentally messed up and cashed em in or got hit by a thief.
Until it happens to them, or to someone they know, then those opinions won't change.
Enjoy the coins.

I wonder what the owner of the business your gf's mother works at would say if he/she was aware that $600 of their property was exchanged for $40 in fiat currency? Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity to

Merc Man================== Quote: I wonder what the owner of the business your gf's mother works at would say if he/she was aware that $600 of their property was exchanged for $40 in fiat currency? While I had a small business (many) years ago === I sincerely hope my wonderful employees grabbed off all the silver. One of my best ladies once told me she got 2 Morgans, and ask me if I wanted them. I did want them, but it was a better deal to just tell her to keep them. She was sooooo happy. I personally may have got maybe a very few Barber half dollars, Quarters, and a few Walkers. My wife and I were only in the store one day a week === Saturdays. The store ran on AUTO pilot 300+ days a year. My only main business concern was the total gross daily deposit. Pitiful me.
