Looks like a small meteorite slammed into it (or bullet maybe - there has been a thread covering this subject). Coin looks buckled, just based on the wear pattern, evident on both sides. Pic is not hi rez, but I can't see any significant scarring on the reverse lettering, or inner circle beads. If it was punched, an effort was made to prevent the obverse from being damaged in the process, like something soft placed under the coin prior attempting to punch.

if it is a mint error how much would it be worth

IF (a big if) it is a genuine mint error then that level of errorness (just coined a new word)would put the coin at $500 plus (I have paid that much for spectacular pre decimal errors). I'm 99.99% certain that it is PMD.

OK, have a look at the obverse rim around the bottom, all the denticles are stretched right out, especially opposite the damage, something must have caused that in the striking, Yes ? Now take a look at all the weakness in the reverse, also another thing you always look for, weakness opposite the damage & I reckon there is blakesley effect directly opposite the damage too. If it is PMD they've done one great job on making it look genuine ( to me anyway ). Better pics are needed, especially to see if there is any fishtailing.

Perplexing, and as an error collector I always hope for a good outcome.! Next to the 'hole' on the reverse looks to be a 'formed' letter like shape.? Renniks variety book doesn't mention any shattered dies but perhaps a foreign object between die and coin.?

Yeah it's a hard one to give a definite answer to. The last lot of pics are much better & i'd like to see a pic of full coin front & back in the better quality ( as the last pics were ) if that possible coinman1974.
