qbvbsite...As everyone is telling you..I also think by the way the top of the "5" is intact that it was there (in the mint) before the strike...Nice keeper.... Remember, that is just my personal opinion.

gbvbsite, compare your coin to the one in this thread which has definite pre strike damage. https://goccf.com/t/182456Note that none of the elements are intact within or across the gouge. Yours is the result of PMD. Look how the caribou's eye has been pressed into the gouge.

Do you see ANY evidence of copper colour metal inside or along the gouge? Remember that this is a multi-ply plated coin, and any scratch on the surface should show the underlying copper plating.
Please post a photo of the other side.

Now that I've seen the obverse Iam going to go out on the limb and say I think there was some kind of debris in the striking chamber.

I am on the fence with this one... my gut instinct tells me that it is some kind of post-strike damage, possibly could have occurred at the mint...

Well it would have to be the mint since this came out of a Mint wrapped roll (unless they get wrapped somewhere else not sure about the process). What confuses me is the 5 is totally intact and I don't see and copper which I believe I should see with this deep of a scratch correct?

No clue about that one either as I also see no copper.

Just took a peek at the caribou scratch... what about this, maybe its not a scratch but a partial clip? Notice the rim nick before the line on the caribou.. also its the exact curve of a quarter. Thoughts SPP (you seem to be an expert in this area?

That is why I asked to see the other side... definitely not a partial clip.

Maybe is got jammed with some other coin... and the other coin has the other part of the clip :). Its from a quarter I'm pretty sure of that.

It's Rolling Machine Damage more likely than anything else. Look at the caribou's eye, that didn't happen by strike-thru, or struck over gouge.
