I have 2, 3, 4, or more copies of the same coin for most years of Lincolns. Why? I keep them for different reasons - usually, they are all actually very different with color, toning, woodgraining, grade, etc.
I've often wondered why so many collectors only keep ONE of each date/mint. I guess I used to be in that camp of "which one do I keep" but now I keep everything I like. Beautiful is beautiful - I can't bring myself to get rid of many of my coins because I just enjoy looking at them so much. For me the driving factor of selling anything is to use the money to buy something different or better.

Instead of wanting a complete set of certain coins, wanting many complete sets is more and more fun. AND too, think of all the people that can't have a complete set due to people like me having so many.  Edited by just carl

Before going to a coin show recently, I made a list of the coins that I needed. I forgot the list and paid $200 for a coin that I already had. I chalked it up to just another senior moment.

I'm currently putting sets together based on strike, color & grade...espresso brown, light brown, purples, reds, rainbow, irradescent toning, woodies etc.... It's challenging and frustrating at times. Cheat sheets help, but at shows and shops it's easy to get distracted. |

I try to keep my inventory up to date, especially my silver inventory. With frequent coin shows and shop visits this can be hard. Nowadays when I go into a coin environment I have a "want" list. The problem is when I see a good deal or a coin with good eye appeal and I can't remember if I have it. Most of my "crappier" coins I don't grade or catalog because there are just too many.

Just think like the government does, "Why buy only one when you can have 2 at twice the price!" Not sure how well that is working for the rest of us, but they love doing it that way. |

Funny this thread pops up today...currently agonizing over a decision to buy a 1909-s VDB in MS64RB.
I already have one (same grade)...but this one is so nice...and a lil' cheaper than I paid for the one I have...nice wood grain...I don't need it....well maybe...I could sell one of 'em...nah they are too nice....I should call my wife first...nah too risky. (Brief insight to my head dilemma).

In the license plate collecting hobby, we call this syndrome 'bench strength'.  Of course plates are a bit different from coins because each has a unique number. |
