An Often Overlooked Source For Cheap Silver

Some 'hard' solder can have silver in it as your link shows, but most common solder does not. Most solder is just tin and lead.

I consider Garbage pick-up day as free yard sale day. When I find and old standing fan or computer tower my heart skips a beat.

I'd hate to think how much you can get out of all that at one's health expense of dealing with nasty acids. Besides, what is one supposed to do with the unwanted residue? Would have been a different story if silver is at 50 USD / oz instead of the current 20 USD / oz.

I'd have to agree with fistfulladirt. I've made more money with aluminum (and glass) during my lifetime than with silver.

Best way to "stack" silver is coin roll hunting, IMHO.

Nitric acid is gross and dirty. Never use it if you don't know what you're doing. That said, don't melt metals (alloys) if you don't know what you're doing.

Also, don't melt silver solder. Sell it to someone that has a use for it. Melting is backwards; people took the time to make it, so why would you unmake it simply for the silver content $?; sell it as is.

I was out of work for four years and much of that time I was a 'Scrapper', There is not a metal out there has no value as scrap. I worked my tail off but help keep us afloat from what others threw away. I did not get rich but it sure helpped pay the bills.

We used to have a lot of metal junk on our farm most was out in the open. However, in one of the outbuildings we had a wooden hay wagon full of those porcelain kitchen sinks that came out of a shuttered hardware store in our town.

Funny thing is while the thieves stole practically every other metal thing they didn't bother those sinks.

LOL they were either to lazy to put the effort in stealing em or maybe rolling up in a junkyard with 25+ sinks might have set some alarm bells off.

My mom eventually sold them to a scrapper.
