Quote:I know this is a old post, but can you help me with what DDO snow 1 means? I bought this 1887 for $120. Was that a good buy or not? Thanks, and I hope someone receives this. DDO means Doubled Die Obverse; Snow-1 is the variety attribution. http://indiancent.wikispaces.com/1887+Snow-1According to Snow's 3rd edition, "the doubling is only visible on the right side of the obverse on the feathers and America" (pg. 567). I can't tell from your photos whether or not yours has the doubling on America maybe someone else can tell. -MV

How does this 1887 Snow 1 fit on the rarity scale?

1887 Snow-1 is a 4 star rating meaning it is one of the top varieties with a premium between 5X to 10X according to the 3rd edition of Rick's book.

52Raymo. I thought I saw the diagnostic doubling but wasn't 100% sure. What grade do you think cheflife's is? Was $120 a good price for this variety? -MV

I have an iPad and can expand the pic quite a bit. I think his is an XF40 or right around there. I think it's one I was following on ebay and he got it for a good price. If it had been in a little better condition, I would have rassled cheflife for it lol.

Based on the date position relative to the denticles, cheflife's coin is not the S-1.
Cheflife, why did you pay up for this?

Oh it's definitely a Snow 1 . I could tell that from the seller pics you first posted. Your pics are getting better, just need to crop them a bit.

Thanks for your replies 52Raymo. What is a coin like this worth? What would you grade it? To me, in person, the only flaws are the braid, and knicks on the front. Liberty is there, date is define, but I have no clue. The only way for me, from my eyes, is I used a microscope. Very easy not to detect. I mostly collect artifacts, but I love everything old, so I am expanding my colletion, into collections. Lol! Thanks again for your replies.

Well your 87 is an XF40-45, somewhere around 15 to twenty bucks just for a normal one. Having a Snow 1 brings a premium of between 5 to 10 times the value. A Snow 1 has a 4 star rating and is a highly sought after variety so it's hard to tell what it could go for on ebay. It just depends how badly a couple guys wanna duke it out. You do have some marks in the field around the nose. I think you did great.
