Just cleaned and left some of the old toning. Proper cleaning and re-toning would look better.

It's cheap because it is a mess. Save your money and buy a nice coin.

It does look like it has been cleaned. In my opinion, if you like the coin and the price is right then you should buy it,the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As I build my coin collection I have to keep reminding myself that a coin can be bought in an instant but selling a coin is much more difficult so unless you like the coin...dont get it.

IMHO I don't think it was cleaned as much as it was exposed to something the affected the tarnish in the center. I can't imagine that would be intentional. The coin is a low grade and would not have eye appeal even without the irregular toning. Unless you buying for Silver value, for a little more you can get a nice 1922.

The only thing that has going for it is a nice clash line on the reverse but still not worth buying in my opinion.

Ok. Thanks guys. I may still wind up buying it at $22.

My odd reasoning is that I have several bu Peace dollars. ( Peace dollars are sort of my thing), but I dont have any that have a lot of character if you know what I mean.

It could wind up a pocket piece.

I'm rather broke this week, so if any of you see a Peace dollar anywhere that has some good "character", and is maybe just nice and banged up, but not cleaned, let me know.

K? Thx.

BUT I'm READY TO BUY A COIN ANYWAY

My man.

It's arguably a worse addiction than the crack.

No need to settle for 'banged up' in this series.
Nice XF-AU common date Peace dollars are plentiful in this area for ~$20-22 each. I buy a few every week just 'cause I like 'em. Be glad to trade off a few for something else in this value range that catches my fancy.

Oh I actually bought this. There's another thread going on in the Main Coin forum where we're discussing why this coin is more manly than other coins.

I am also terrible at determining if a coin has been cleaned. I need to buy a good book on the subject.

You can start with the fact that natural toning on a circulated coin is extremely rare.

Aha! I did not know that Dave. Thank you. Learn something new everyday.

I think the coin is a little odd because, considering that some of the toning appears to have been rubbed away, it looks like maybe there was cleaning, then retoning, and then more cleaning.

Lol.

Well, with my last said, I have the feeling that this one toned "naturally" according to the methods considered NT - it sat for quite a while in a collection. Coins don't tone in circulation - they tone while sitting. Unfortunately for this one, it looks like that natural toning happened while it was glued to something, leaving that splotch on the reverse, and as a result it won't be considered NT. However, the color progression and physical propagation patterns are appropriate for NT.
