I want to know why we make such a fuss over the 22 "plain" cent and nobody give a darn over the 1968, 69 and 70 "plain" nickels

Good marketing on someone's part is all. As I remember it some guy came up with a hoard of 1922 plain cents and spread the news and offered money for them in the papers. Then other papers picked up the 'story' and collectors bought into it. Then dealers paid premium for them. Now here we are spending the rent mony to buy a coin that would better be classified as an error to complete our sets. I am glad someone did not hype the wide AMs the same way.

The "No D's" wouldn't exist if Philly had minted Cents. Denver would never had to have pushed the dies that far.

Why didn't Philadelphia produce cents in 1922? Was there no demand on the east coast or was it something else?

Celticsoul, thanks for the link. That sure answered my question and I think I'm going to spend some time reading all the other info available at that site.

Quote: I want to know why we make such a fuss over the 22 "plain" cent and nobody give a darn over the 1968, 69 and 70 "plain" nickels Mostly due to almost every coin collector collects pennies. But Nickels are just not that popular. So although there are some rather expensive and/or raresh Nickels, they mostly get ingnored. Pennies are possibly the most collected coins in the USA. Every little oddball thing about them gets popularized. For example the 55 Doubled Die. Yet there are many Doubled Die cents, but that one gets all the popularity. Almost any just plain Nickel would possibly just go unnoticed.

The worst part of coins, such as the 22 plain Cent, is so many coin Album and Folder makers put a slot in their product for such coins. My Whitman Albums have slots for that coin, the 55 Doubled Die, the 72 Doubled Die, all the 60's, 70's, 82's, etc. I just don't know why we can't get an Album for the normal, good old regular, every day coins. And worse yet is the 22 is just an accident. Not a true error unless we call everything not done perfectly an error. Ever wonder how many other coins are missing a Mint Mark?

Quote: I want to know why we make such a fuss over the 22 "plain" cent and nobody give a darn over the 1968, 69 and 70 "plain" nickels I think it's mainly because 1922 is the only year in the entire series that Philadelphia didn't mint any coins. Many of us have grown used to seeing Philly pennies in change and regard them as comforting old standbys. But while a 1922 Plain is not a Philly issue, it looks like one, which makes it seem like a coin we need to have. The fact that it's not really a Philly coin and is also very rare makes it even more fun to think about.
