Um, I admit I misread the coin as well when I looked at it earlier today, but it's a coin, it's not Charlie Hebdo. It's been sitting in my safety deposit box for 35 years. You folks don't permit coins to be graded that are damaged and inadvertently look like bad words? I'm having a difficult time believing that's an actual rule here, but if a moderator tells me to delete the coin, I will, as it's their site.

Wait, are you saying someone did that to the coin on purpose? An elderly family friend sold me the thing in the late 70s. I was around 15 years old. If it was done intentionally, I suspect it wasn't him.

actually these large cents were purposely defaced to look like that fairly often, I'm not trying to get on your bad side with my post. I just wanted to let you know incase you didn't and also since this is a family friendly site, its nothing personal.

Really? Wow, that's bizarre and obnoxious. I can't believe the old guy didn't see it when he sold it to me! (And he really was a family friend, there's NO WAY he did this on purpose. In that case, I'll take it down. I just figured it was an error in the coin or something, and thought of asking about it in my post, but then thought I was nuts that I thought it said that! No prob, I'll remove it. Sorry I doubted you ;-)

The people that do that to large cents and Half Cents are probably related to the creators of "potty" Trade dollars.

just for the record you could possibly get $15 or so for the 1848 as a curiosity piece.

Vf-30 on the '53.........and I got a kick out of reading what was on the '48, amazing what people will go through to try to raise an eyebrow or two.

The '53 is a really nice coin IMO.

It's been a long time since I collected coins (I only recently decided it was time to open my time-vault (also known as my safety deposit box) and take a look at what I had bought 35 years ago. The thnig is, I hear that it's a VF-30 and I almost feel disappointed that it's not higher. In what sense is it a really nice coin? I guess I keep thinking there must be a lot of coins that rate higher -- or is that not the case, that there really aren't that many, from that era, or that particularly coin, that rank a lot higher?

It is more or less just a solid collector coin that doesn't have any major condition issues and has better eye appeal than most circulated 1853s. It is not especially high grade or value but is something that a middle class collector could find joy in obtaining and plugging into their type set.

Ah ok, good point. Fair enough. I did notice, for my tastes, that it seemed in awfully good shape for its age. I mean, I still love my 1802 large cent, just because of the history of it being so old.

I'm curious about the 1853. What causes that blotchy look in the fields? Is that toning, or something environmental? Anyone?

Just normal toning. Normally splotchiness would indicate artificial toning but in this case it appears to be normal. Copper is very reactive and sometimes tones unevenly but the chocolate brown color here is natural. IMHO.
