This seems more complicated than it should be. I like Anoob's way of organizing it, only I would make it 10 years from 0-300 AD, then 25 years to 600 AD.

I agree, Anoob's idea seems to be the best. The more complicated this becomes the less people would want to get involved with it.

Having different time frames makes it more complicated in my opinion. And where would you place Probus? His reign crosses the boundary of a decade, so you need a rule to assign it to one. And the bolded above is not too complicated I think - but I am open to suggestions. (Do we disallow coins from Probus or similar?)
Would have personally favoured to use the middle but to use the start will be easier for many in my opinion.

I say both of his decades. Dated ones go in their appropriate decades but for the rest either decade would do fine. But ultimately its your call.

There will be issues and that is fine. Just remember that priority one is to have fun showing coins.

Besides, I am sure you will have it all ironed out for the second edition.

Can't really have the same coin (type) posted by one member for one decade and then by another member in the earlier decade.

But perhaps the wording can be improved, how about:

A coin with a minting period in two decades will be placed in the earlier one.

yeah guys, it's getting pretty complicated. I think if we want more participation from causal collectors of ancients, we may want to streamline it and make it less challenging to figure out where people should post their coins.

jbuck makes a good point, it should just be fun. I've found this to be true...

i would suggest making the time spans a large as youre comfortable with, and letting people post in them however they want.

Lol yeah. I feel like we are on the low end of that graph right now.

Seems most everyone here is not up to a challenge but rather favours a free for all.

If we want to achieve anything but just posting random coins, there need to be some rules.
All apart from which decade a coin counts for are as in the main forum threads - and plenty people still have fun with it.

Quite happy to hear from someone a simple rule which still allows a thread to be a challenge.

I'm reminded of the old saying about how a camel is a horse designed by committee...

Med, you should trust your instincts and vision. I know you'd find the right balance between the need for some basic, needed guidelines and goal of keeping the thread as inclusive as possible. Go for it.

Thanks for the encouraging words 'Bob_L.

Do you consider the
"A coin with a minting period in two decades will be placed in the earlier one."
as easy to understand and manage?

With all the negativity around one has to question though, if it is worth while attempting.

Easy to understand? Yes.

Easy to manage? We'll have to see.

Folks will adjust to the rules and, if they don't, so what? It's not like they'll be fined or excluded from the boards if they misstep, right? A gentle reminder about a rule will get them back on track for their next post. The most important rule, to be strictly followed by all, should be: have fun.

OK, I think this thread has gone as far as it's going to go. The bottom line is that it's your idea and you need to set up the easiest and simplest rules that will make it fun and for people to want to contribute. You have some good idea's to work with. Come up with the rules and lets start the game. I will give you a chance to comment and than I'm locking this thread.
