Wireman,
not trying to be negative here.
BUT, are you sure that this coin is a AV as it is known?
Could you please post a sharp close up of the AV?
Maybe it is just the way light struck the coin when taking pictures.
To me it looks like a die chip in the right place.
Normally the cross bar is very straight and thin.

I don't see how ICCS gives that a Fine.

A definite VG grade.

VG10 ICCS. Advice to those that think these are scarce and highly prized.........NOT. They seem to be every where in low grade. It would be no surprise if 20 - 25 per cent of the entire 1872 H mintage was this variety. These are VERY hard to sell in lower grade.

I think it will probably end up in a VG-8 problem-free ICCS holder.

Thank you everyone for your opinions on this coin. I also think it is probably a VG10 but am concerned about the mark on the reverse. I am sending in to ICCS a bunch of vickies and edward halfs and will be including this one. When it comes back I will post the results for all to see.
As pacific noted this variety is more common in low grades but is extremely rare in high grades.
@47P7...My photo skills are limited. I bought this coin in 1980 as a A/V from a very prominent numismatics. Because of who I purchased it from I have never doubted it not being this variety. I will ask ICCS to verify the variety and post the results to confirm if it is or not.
@zxcccxz...The toning on this coin is NT and not AT. The easiest way to tell NT from AT is a coin with NT the toning will tend to pull away from the devices and high points. In the pictures this can been seen. On AT coins the toning will not pull away and will be continuous.
What makes this coin special to me is the fact that it is a original coin. So many coins have been cleaned and molested over the years it's seldom you can find a original coin. That's one of the reasons I posted it was so some of the younger collectors could see what a 143 year old original coin looks like.

Wireman , ICCS will probably note the mark on the certificate. Will not hurt too much as to value though. There are lots of collectors who would love to have a complete set of halves matched like your pictured coin. I was recently, finally (after five years from my first offer!)able to buy an old time fifty cent collection from an elderly gentleman. The coins were from 1902-36 in old book shelve albums, all VG fine and pretty well matched.

@pacific...I agree that ICCS will probably note the reverse mark on the holder. I'm just not crazy about having "detail" coins in my collection. I'm still going to send it in to ICCS as I want to have the variety verify. I need to have some items in my collection certified as my son has never really been passionate about coin collecting as I have. I know he's smart as he has 2 degrees and spent 7 years at university. This way someday (hopefully a very long time) he can read the flips and know what he has.

I finally got around to sending this coin to ICCS. I got it back today and this is how it was graded.

Again, I think they knocked it down a grade for the reverse damage.

I think your right. They net graded it as a VG-8. I'd rather have it knocked down a grade than have a detail.

Brings up an interesting point for a new thread. Net grade vs technical and detail for problem coins. What would collectors prefer?
